I added custom google search and site has disappeared

I had posted in the general topic area but I believe this is the place I should be asking this sort of question.

I started a site a few months ago, a small website based on wordpress, the niche really only gets about 50 visitors a day and I have both google adsense and amazon astore running on it, the aim of the site is that it will pay for itself so that I can provide the information.

The site was ranking top 5 for a number of keyword phrases related to this topic.

Pretty much all of the trafic comes from google searches.

A couple of nights ago I was experimenting with different search boxes on my wordpress theme and I decided to use google adsense custom search. When I went back today to check how the site was ranking against a few new keywords it was gone, my site no longer ranks at all for any of the keywords.

If I use site: google brings up all the indexed pages, so it looks like it has removed my ranking rather than deindexed (is that a word?) me.

I was thinking that the reason this has happened is because the searchresults page for the custom search box was showing up in my navigation, I have rewritten the function to prevent this from happening.

The reason I am asking about this site is to check if there is anything I can do, there isn't much point in me constantly adding infromation to this site if no-one is going to be able to find it.

    Hi reillymary56,

While it could be something you changed on the website, I would not automatically assume that to be true. Since your website is only a few months old, it is likely that your pages were temporarily boosted in ranking due to QDF (Query Deserves Freshness) factor and this temporary boost wore off leaving your pages at their truly earn positions.

This happens with many new websites. Now you must promote your website to truly earn those higher rankings.

I don't think you were out ranked by others due to the Google CSE in your site.
May be your site don't have enough backlinks and good SEO.
As dburk told new articles are ranked higher for few weeks or months.
Now you should work on building Backlinks and SEO.

Is it only google that does this?

I have checked both yahoo and bing and the website is still ranking well with them.

The problem I have with this site is that there really isn't anywhere that I can create backlinks that are relevant. The reason I made this site is because I had been searching the internet for a long time and couldn't find anything on this topic, I started putting together any information that I found and then thought I that I might as well put it in a website to help others with the same problem.

The website is only relevant to a local group of about 10,000 people and would have a very low search count, maximum of about 50 per day.

What I find most strange is when I search for my domain name keywords my site doesn't show at all, but other sites that have linked to my site do.

        Hi reillymary56,

        Only Google uses QDF.

I don't understand why you think you cannot create relevant backlinks. Many places where you can place your link will allow you to create text snippets and/or anchor text, which is often all you need to make that page relevant.

Remember, the 1st rule of SEO is that search engines index and rank web pages, not websites. All you need to do is make the page where you place you link relevant to keyword. This means article syndication and Web 2.0 properties make it very easy to create relevant backlinks for any keyword.
