Let me keep this short:

  • Youtube has a closed captions feature which helps people understand the voice in it.
  • Google indexes the captions [proven]... so captions help in SEO.
  • closed captions are like subtitles in a movie... you have to create a .srt file with the timing and text... [until now]. Nobody does this because it is a pain in the ass.
  • Now youtube has introduced a feature where it can generate captions automatically from the transcript.
Just tried it:

And it works for automatic voice too! Damn!

This feature would be great for people who convert articles to videos. More SEO power for your YouTube Videos!

PROOF - YouTube's Closed Captions DO Work for Video SEO

So, it probably comes as no surprise that YouTube and Google ARE, in fact, using the text within closed captions on YouTube to index YouTube videos.

Back in October of 2009, Mike Lees, a ReelSEO reader and Founder of Captionworld.co.uk, emailed me to show results whereby his videos were being ranked for terms only found within his closed captions and subtitles on YouTube. According to Mike, for his videos, he has seen views on some of his videos increase 10 fold after the addition of closed captions. While Ive known about this for many months now, I was unable to duplicate results myself until earlier this year. As a result of this discussion with Mike, I set out to do several tests to prove that YouTube was indexing the text from closed captions files. You can see an example of one of my test videos here. So, it has taken me close to 4 months to get this post up, but better late than never, right?

The following is a video I created to demonstrate proof that YouTube and Google are indexing videos for the text contained within closed captions on YouTube:

Played with this already, but so far it is absolutely horrible in determining the actual words. You MUST edit the file and correct the mistakes, phrase by phrase.

      Hopefully this improves.

looks like you did not read my post carefully. I am not talking about the auto transcription service. I am talking about closed captions by the video owner.

Uhhh you said: Now youtube has introduced a feature where it can generate captions automatically from the transcript. So looks like you misunderstood my post.

I WAS trying the CC feature actually early this morning. It does look promising, but it spews out a LOT of garble, especially for technical jargon - it is NOT ready for prime time use yet, at least without a LOT of editing. The time it takes to edit how many mistakes I saw, makes it rather a pain right now.

You are still better off using a service like CaptionTube to create your cc files, even though you are starting from scratch, its just easier than finding mistakes. This also allows you to make sure your keywords are properly noted by the Youtube, something the cc feature is terrible at recognizing so far.

All this is just another reason why working from a script when producing your videos will save you time later for taking advantage of features like this. It is still best to copy your script phrases into CaptionTube at the time they are spoken.

MUCH better option for captions IMHO >

    You don't get it!

YouTube has a feature which generates automatic translations for the voice in the video. But their speech to text model is not perfect and it generates the words horribly sometimes very funny. I am not talking about that at all. Forget auto transcriptions for now.

YouTube has a feature called closed captions which allows us to upload the captions (SRT) file which is just like the subtitles of a movie. That files should have the timings in place and also the text which appears for each timing. This is a tedious process and not many people do it. Here's an example of how a timed caption file looks like:

    0:00:03.490,0:00:07.430
    >> FISHER: All right. So, let's begin.
    This session is: Going Social

    0:00:07.430,0:00:11.600
with the YouTube APIs. I am
    Jeff Fisher,
    0:00:11.600,0:00:14.009
    and this is Johann Hartmann,
    we're presenting today.
    0:00:14.009,0:00:15.889
    [pause]
But in this post what I have described is that you need not enter the timing anymore. Instead just upload the transcript file and youtube will automatically recognize the timings.

Transcript = text/article/script of the audio that is in the video.

Let me know if you are clear.
