So according to yahoo I have 1730 backlinks, altavista puts me for over 3000, google for only 3. And my site is only PR1. Anybody has an idea as far as why this is happening?

The site that I am referring to is http://www.feedtherightwolf.org

Google is smart enough that they know that 10,000 backlinks on crap sites shouldn't count as much as 5 backlinks on quality sites. Just getting backlinks in and of itself isn't the answer to getting your sites PR rating to go up.

Quality content, quality backlinks, backlinks on sites that actually are relevent to your sites content, and countless other things effect a sites PR.

According to Google they look at over 500 million variables to figure PR.

Here is a wiki article on PR that gives a good breakdown on it.

The search engine have a very good understanding of backlink value and they don't pay much attention to backlinks that are easy to create. They want to see backlinks that prove of your value, meaning that you are quoted rather than you creating your own links. Forums and articles arent such good links because they are easy to create. You have to try to get other people to backlink you. One method would be to go to google and type "add url" followed by the subject you are involved in. Dont go for paid links or reciprocal links, but the no strings attached links. You will be surprised that there are such sites but there are.

Lastly the higher the PR of the site you are backlinking too the more value. This however doesn't mean that the other links should be ignored because it proves that you are active and can help you in the end.

That's right, it all depends from the PR of the pages linking to your page, is like saying you go for an audition and get a role as an actor and 100 of your friends, who don't know about acting, say that you are a good actor, but then Brad comes along and says you are a good actor, what's more worth, your 100 friends or the authority one?

Another point I'd like to make is that the PR of your site is really not important and not worth concentrating on, what matter is how well your site is converting, if you convert at 1% then all your effort should go into testing different headlines, changing colors and so on to try and raise conversion, if you get it to just 2% you've doubled your conversion rate and hence you sales, and that's not difficult to do.

      I hope this helps.
