End of good ol' AdSense blog monetization?

Hi guys,

I am a newbie marketer and I need your help.

Many marketers say that Google now has 3 main components of their algorithm for ranking a page.

If i understand well, to existing 'backlinks' and 'content' components Google has recently added 'activity' component. Stuff like commenting, sharing... It all counts now, mostly because of the social media influence.

I have researched couple of keywords with great traffic that led to physical products.
Good number of them had weak competitors on Google's Top 10. Those weak competitor's domains are mostly 1 year old and in despite of Google's change of the rules they still rank pretty good.

So they are almost-no-content-AdSense-driven blogs that rank great.

I am tempted to start with this model, but I am not sure about those Google's changes and if and when they might occur.

Does that change mean that good ol' sites that monetize on big traffic and AdSense won't be so successful anymore?

What do you think about promoting physical products as a model of blog monetization?
AdSense, banners...

Thank you very much in advance!

I think Adsense is alive and kicking if you know how to use it right and have a lot of traffic. If it's true that Google is taking into account commenting, sharing, etc then I don't see why blogs would rank poorly since you can comment on posts (unless of course you disable it).

BS by someone who's trying to sell a vastly overpriced SEO course but people take it at face value anyway.

The more things change, the more they stay the same.

So they are almost-no-content-AdSense-driven blogs that rank great.

Let me check... Yep, still works.

Just one hint though, physical products don't do as well as other options when it comes to Adsense.

As for "activity"...yea, i know some semi-guru launched a huge new massively expensive product that goes on and on about this....

But, my experience is that it doesn't really matter all that much for SERP ranking. Having activity will certainly increase crawl frequency, which is great if you want new posts indexed quickly. But for actually ranking, I just don't think this is an accurate description of the current Google landscape.

Once my sites are up, I pretty much never add new content or update. I get them to rank well, then show them a little love with backlinks from time to time.

You know what happens? They keep their top spots, with zero activity, period.

As for content, sure Google uses the text/code on a page to determine relevancy, but don't confuse content with "Google rewards quality content", because it doesn't. You can have a crap 500 word page with spun content but if you have it SEO'd properly, Google will think your site is awesome for that keyword and give you good rankings for it.

Now, good content can certainly help for sales (although note that with adsense, specifically, typically the worse the content, the more clicks you get), and to get return visitors, it just doesn't help with actual SERP rankings.

People can go ahead and worry about "activity" all they want. I'll focus on stuff that actually work (like backlinks) to get a site to rank.

Thanks guys! Guess I'm still too naive when dealing with 'gurus' and their launches.

This activity ideas is rubbish, but someone's probably making loads of money out of it!

My best AdSense page contains 200 words I wrote in 1997 and haven't touched since. There's no commenting or liking or anything else on the page. Old school still works!

i think it's getting easier to get social-based sites ranking well on a temporary basis, but the big traffic volumes will still be going to the established authority sites.
