New Adsense AD Format - You May Be Losing Money Already

Hey warriors,

Just noticed it today and perhaps a lot of you noticed it already. Adsense just implemented a new format in their ads.

Since this is obviously a new chapter for Adsense afficionados, you might want to check your stats and see if it changes anything.

Just checked mine and so far im 20% lower than my average at this time. Will be keeping a close eye on everything.

I suggest you do the same.

Your thoughts?

Yep, yesterday and today, it seems my CTR went lower. Was it yesterday they implemented those "improvements?" Seems like the opposite happening.

Those heads of the Adsense dept don't seem to ever get down to the ground and understand the real situation.

Just like with the Third party and interest based ads....Which they insisted would be an "improvement."

They've done this before on several occasions, testing several different layout variations.

Emphasis is on test, though. Chances are if it's reduced your CTR, it's reducing other peoples too. Google isn't in the business of intentionally lowering their revenues, so rest assured that it'll probably change back once the testing period is over, in a few days.

I like the change - and my adsense went up. For this format, the colors you choose might be critical for CTR.

I primarily use 336 x 280 blocks & my CTR is 15% lower today - I think having the URL beside the link just looks more cluttered... was better when it was below the description. I hope they change it back!

I primarily use 336x280, too. In contrast though, I think it looks less cluttered, since there's more vertical "breathing space" between ads.

I can't tell if it's affected my CTR or not really at the moment, since Fridays for me are usually actually quite slow in comparison to other weekdays anyway; they pick up a little later.

If any of these new layout variations Google has been testing prove beneficial for some (even if not all) publishers, perhaps Google will actually let you customize the order in which the various aspects of the advertisment are displayed, since up until now we've only been able to choose the size and shape of the ad, but the actual layout within that box hasn't been customizable.

I got this from Google Adsense Blog
      • Leaderboard (728x90): the title, description, and URL are now arranged in rows instead of columns (except in the case when only one ad is showing)
      • Medium and large rectangles (300x250, 336x280): the URL is now in the same line as the title

They've been testing this on various sites/browsers for a while.
Looks like they are expanding that. If you search this forum,
it came up many times in the past.

It really should have little to do with ctr. And if it does, it should be
more adwords favorable. Remember, we are living off of adwords
customers, not anything we own or run.

Google is in the business of making their adwords customers happy.
        They pay. We don't.

I'll you what. That new format looks more like content links. It should
actually be better. Looks like you may want to swap a 728x15 link
unit for one of those 728x90 babies.

I think it's at random, I saw it for a little bit on one site, and then it's all normal on the rest of my sites.

I did notice a decrease in CTR though for today.

My CTR has been increased ever since this change.

I am currently using 336 box with red (ff0000) title, #cccccc font and #b3b3b3 url

I do a bunch of XFactor style sites and most of my sites get about 30-40% CTR and some are over 60%.

Nope. I don't think so.. their new ad look is really attractive and away from the look of an AD. It's gonna work great.

The 728x90 Ad looks good - I would agree it looks more like natural links & less like an Ad.

The 336 Box looks worse in my opinion, more cluttered. I don't like the URL directly beside the blue link, some getting cut off so you see a partial url.

Yeah I stand corrected with regards to what I said earlier: this change does indeed appear to be permanent, as indicated by the official Adsense blog.

Two new colour schemes combinations (not necessarily using these exact colours for the title, however) I'm testing right now on my new-style 336x260 ad blocks, are:

        Something like this:

A Bit Like This Example www.example.com
The description goes here bla blaaady
        bla bla bla bla

        A Bit Like This Example

A Bit Like This Example www.example.com

        bla bla bla bla

... and secondly, something like this:

The description goes here bla blaaady
        bla bla bla bla

When there are changes you have a choice.

You can complain about how it's hurting you - or you can find ways to make changes of your own so it doesn't hurt you.

Often it's not what the change was that bothers people - but only the fact that "something changed".

Now a visitor can't copy & paste the Adsense Ad URL.

When the link was at the bottom it was easy to copy & paste.

Sure they can just type it in their browser (unless it's a long url), I think most people are lazy & would click before having to type.
They are probably also too lazy to copy & paste as opposed to just clicking the link right there. However I see your point.

Rather than start another thread, I'll give something I had thought of.

You need to check your sites and how the adsense is showing.
If your ad formats are the ones where the url gets side by side billing,
you may need to rethink your url color. My text was always black
and url gray. With the side by side, the gray url does not look right.
Just a thought to people that they may need to do some tweaking.

I don't believe the skyscraper formats are affected, at least from what
I can tell. But, if you want the ads to match, make them all the same.

One problem is that the URL of the advertising website is shown along the top and the visitor will know that its an external site. Before the URL was below the links and it was possible to 'confuse' the visitor into thinking the ads are part of the site.
But its not a major issue, just tweaking and playing with the colour scheme will get everything back as before.

That's a good point and maybe get people to thinking about color schemes to
improve performance. Besides target visitors, it's really all about colors and
placements, isn't it? Maybe going back to a gray url is better. I'll let it ride and
          see how it goes.

I doubt you were confusing anyone. "ads by google" is clear on all the ad blocks.

People read from left to right - they see the title first and are just as likely to click on it as before.

Yes, there are many plugins for Wordpress that can generate their own Adsense code, so long as you input your Adsense Publisher ID.

A search on Google may also show up various web-based scripts (like Google Adsense Code Generator) that can generate the code for you.

I use Wordpress and the only time I've ever generated the code through Google directly is when I've wanted to put up some link-unit ads (since the plugin I use doesn't generate the code for them).
