I Woke Up This Morning Only To Find...

That one of my sites that was sitting at number 4 on Google for a keyword is now on page 4! Arrrggghh...

Did I get slapped or could my site just being doing the Google dance?

It seems that when my sites are doing some dancing that they may drop one page, but not four.

Could anyone provide some perspective or maybe have had this happen to them?

I have been actively adding content and doing link building. The link building has all been done by me, so I don't think too many links are being thrown at the site.

Cheers

It's probably just the Google dance. I had a site that was position #4 from last August until April, then suddenly disappeared for around 2 months. It slipped from there to page position #1xx or so, then back up to around position #6x. It's still not properly recovered (and to be fair, I haven't been actively backlinking it much - just every now and then), but it's slowely but surely creeping back up.

I'd just keep building your links, it'll probably come back.

Sites engaging in the Google "dance" aren't limited to only slipping down by a few places. In my experience they can and often will slip by many tens or even hundreds of places... but they always come back.

Site is currently about 2.5 months old. I know it's young, but with steady unique content and steady backlinks, I was able to rank it.

Have to agree with DireStraits, it's just the Google Dance, keep doing what your doing and your site should be back to page 1 shortly.

Also, just something I do when one of my sites start to move around in the SERPs, create a video (can be a video article or have someone on Fiver do a review of your site, whatever) upload the video to YouTube and, of course, link the video back to your site.

The video will usually rise to the first page of the target keyword(s) before my site get's there and helps to draw (or continue to draw) traffic to site, so I don't have to wait.

I appreciate the feedback. It can be so frustrating at times...Also, thanks for the nice tip on creating the YouTube Video! I'll take action on that tip.

Whatever happens next 4 weeks, DO NOT stop working as usual. Keep on writing new articles, keep on promoting the site with fresh backlinks.

Give 4-6 weeks to decide what to do.

I plan to continue as normal. I have been feeding it one new unique blog on a weekly basis.

What are some things I should consider if after 4 - 6 weeks it still hasn't recovered at all?

It's likely the Google dance and it affects new sites more than old ones. It always happens when you do too much link building and it takes about 4 to 6 months before it becomes more stable.
