Was anyone ever hit with such a "penalty" ?

hello warriors,

I have a niche authority website with a lot of number 1-5 positions on GG.

In particular, I had this keyword for which I had been number 1 for at least one year (via a dedicated article page, not the home page of the site).

All of the sudden, a week ago, the page lost it's ranking. In fact it's out of the top 100 for this keyword (though the page is still indexed).

I did not do anything shady on this page ; in fact (and this might be the problem), i have not added a new backlink towards it in a year.

the only potential problem is discovered is that a spammer copied my article and posted it on 10 blogger blogs with his affiliate links.

So did I get a penalty because of that ducplicate content ?

Or is it something else ? Has anyone ever encountered such situation and how did you solve it ??

Thanks

This could easily be because of the scraped content. Are the scraped pages now coming up in searches for the same keywords? If this is the case, content scraping is can be a tough matter to deal with. One thing you can do is write to the blog owners and insist they either remove the content or include a dofollow link to the source in the content itself (this tells Google that your article is the original). Often though people who steal content don't reply to such email. You could contact Google directly:
    Digital Millennium Copyright Act

The best strategy is to copyright your website first in the US (I think it consts $35 for the whole site, or something like that) and then report the copyright violation to Google.

Another viable option is to build more and better links to content on your site. If content has better links, Google assumes it's the original.
