Blogs and their comments... Keyword Density changes?

I just thought about this and probably could waste a lot of time searching for the answer, but I figured I'd just make a thread and ask. I also fear that the answer is exactly what I think it would be...

So say you write an article and you target a certain keyword phrase and you get the density down perfect, etc. (not that I ever worry about keyword density other than using it a few times naturally, and in the title)

Eventually you get comments rolling in. Say the conversation goes off topic and people keep using a certain word or phrase over and over. Could this actually hurt the rankings you were going for by shifting the on-page SEO? Would it be better to turn off comments (considering my case, where its not meant to generate comments. The posts are just essays).

What is your take on this? Thanks for your time!

Crazy i was just going through this with a coworker today.

    the good side of comments:

constantly changing content is great. The page is evolving and have new stuff on it all the time for the search engines to crawl and stay with your site.

    The bad side of comments:

Yea you can mess up a density that you are trying to hit for certain keywords.

My take is that the comments are normally going to be so extremely closely related and relevant to the keyword, blog, article, topic that often you will not fall out of the reasonable range for density. Remember, there is no exact science behind keyword density. Yes, if you dont have it at all, or 80%, there is going to be some issues, but it is a general spread.

Also, remember, if you density starts getting out of control, you have the ability to remove certain comment!

In the end i doubt the density flux will fall outside the reasonable range and constantly evolving content is always good

yes i'm afraid if the off topics comments greatly outnumber the kewords and content related to your original post, it might affect rankings. If you have the time you can closely monitor the comments and delete all irrelevant ones. as promet/mktg says, comments are helpful to keep your blog content fresh which is what search engine spiders love.
