How many keywords do you go after?

Just curious, when your starting out a new site, or optimizing something that has been around for awhile, how many different keywords (phrases) do you focus on?

Do you start with one and add on to that, or just go for all them at once?

Do you just keep with one keyword (or phrase) and optimize it until you're blue in the face?

Don't know about anybody else but the way I do it is focus on one main keyword phrase I want to rank for and than I use the Google Related Searches, Google Keyword Tool, Google WonderWheel and Google Insights in order to find 5-6 related keywords.

I find this to be the best way for me to get ranked high for my main keyword. By adding relevant content on 5-6 related keywords.

For my small niche sites, typically about 6.

Each keyword will have it's own post/page, with the other 5 keywords in as LSI.

    Hi,

I use usually one long tail keyword for every single page
and one ( but different ) keyword for each article or blog post I write.

    works fine!

I don't usually go for more than 3 for a new site and have 1 of those as my main keyword. After spending some time optimizing for those I generally find 3 or 4 other useful keywords present themselves through looking at analytics and the webmaster tools.

        I do the same.
Less keywords - more chances to succeed.

SEO for new site is relatively difficult then SEO of old site, I prefer to work on 3 or 4 keywords so that i can concentrate on my work. Also One or two long tail keywords that are easy to get on first page.

I use upto 5 main keywords and while creating text I don't really bother about having it occur a set number of times except when it occurs naturally. the best way to promote these is having these keywords as anchor while creating backlinks.

I use a core keyword and then build additional content around

    1. Additional keywords containing my core keyword as shown in GAKT
    2. Keywords Google thinks are related according to their Wonderwheel....

I also tend to 'silo' the site structure around Wonderwheel results, meaning that I build vertical navigation paths according to how the words are related in Wonderwheel

I find it is a lot easier to plan and structure a site if I have a large pool of keywords ready to go. This makes it easy to get the categories and sitewide navigation spot-on from the beginning. Once I have my list of keywords and site planned I work on no more than 5 keywords (pages) at a time. Once I am happy with the off-site promotion for those 5 I move onto the next group.

It often can take up to 6 months before I site starts to take off so this allows me to have a lot of pages primed and ready for when Google starts to trust the domain/site a lot more...and the backlinks have aged.

I'd recommend checking out the Google "Wonder Wheel" which will show related keywords you can usually find within the same "family" of keywords and can give you a good idea of other rankable keywords or at least keywords that will help the overall oomph of your site in SERP's. Also I've gone after many single keywords to check profitability, sometimes they're hit or miss, the misses that don't make as much I usually flip, the hits I will gauge difficulty / profitability of ranking for other keywords and decide if it's worth it.

Right now, I am going after 3 different keyword phrases...

I have one on the 4th page, another on the 2 page, and another one 2nd on the first page.

Working on getting them all atleast on the first page.

    Consistency is Key!

But, I targeted one keyword at a time when I first started out. Got that one where I want it to be, and thought I would target 2 more to see if I could get them there as well.

Start off with a keyword and then try and turn it into a keyphrase usually about 8 - 10 words for example "helmets" then turn it into "Arai Motor Cycle Helmets Crash Hats & Motorcycle Visors Washington"
