Which is best for SEO, pinging or bookmarking?

I used to get indexed really quickly with bookmarking sites like Propeller, Chipmarks and others. Lately, I haven't been able to tell it's working as well as it used to.

I've been using ping-o-matic.com lately, but I'm not sure I'm as much out of it as I'd like.

Any insight into which method I should spend my time doing?

I don't think bookmarking does as much as it used to either. Although in my opinion, I'd do both.

Pinging can get your updates spidered right away, on the other hand bookmarking works only when you have good content and you need to interact with people to make it popular, however it's a good resource for building backlinks.

Pinging one site at a time is so slow. I wish I could import a list and hit "send"!

Not sure if this is what you mean but pingdevice.com let's you import a list of url's and ping them all at once. Hope that helps.

Pinging seems temporary and may work faster. Bookmarking is permanent.

Pinging is like you are telling the spiders/bots about your site/blog, if you notice, when
you ping a forum with no user online, you will see in few seconds, there will some
visitors (usually I can see about 5-6 at a time). Those are bots. It's great to use
if you want to tell those bots, "Hey, I have new content on my site, come visit my
site and digest the content" for instance.

While Bookmarking, usually Bookmark sites like Digg, Stumbleupon, Propeller, etc2.
is very busy with bots come in/out. So, when people bookmark their site/blog on
bookmarking sites, you are also inviting those bots to your site/blog. And the other
thing, you are leaving backlink(s) on it. Which means, it is a good thing in terms
of boosting your SERP. And you can also get real human visitors from those
    bookmarking sites as well.

    Wow so many useless answers.
    nouseforaname comes the closest.

In addition to what he said, bookmarking gets you a back link.

Also if you are using a blog, most automatically ping, so no need to do it manually. There is also software to automate bookmarking, which you might want to look into.
And don't forget to ping your bookmark accounts.

I feel bookmark is the better of the two. I have tried it myself and I found at least there is some amount of hope in getting some link back to our sites in bookmark method of SEO.

It shouldn't be a versus discussion at all. For one they have two separate functions, but can both help to achieve a faster indexing of a page. Beyond a potentially faster indexation of the page the ping is not gonna help you any further, where as ideally if you are bookmarking you are not only getting a link (though many are nofollow and do not have a direct SEO effect) but also getting your story into the social networking field where it can be shared with many.

That is of course, if you are creating the type of content that is worthy of sharing. These should be looked at like two ingredients in a recipe. You wouldn't ask "Butter or Sugar?" when baking cookies. Both are essential at least if you want them to taste any good.

The problem is the SEO "weight" of social bookmaking has dropped significantly compared to just 2 years ago as it got more and more popular and wasn't a thorough way to establish importance of a site anymore.

I think now not only does social bookmarking/pinging matter, but for long term SEO you need a variety of backlinks spread throughout the web from a variety of sources.

Generally ping is used for blog. Blog is updated many times in a month. So, ping is best one for SEO.
