Facebook PPC?

I'm pretty new to SEO and IM but I'm serious about it. I'm not looking for get rich quick schemes, empty promises and expensive programs with exaggerated claims. The information overload on this topic though is draining. With the way Google works now, having robots put articles with Pig English in Ezines type sites does not seem wise to me.
I did some research, and Facebook targeted ads seem very inciting. For example I can target male gamers from 18-50 who like a certain game (or whatever). Then I create a landing page with clickbank(whatever affiliate of the day) links or even create a relationship system where people leave their email in exchange for a free guide or take a survey. A free offer is a big point. Then you send them occasional emails. You get the drift.
Anyone try anything like this? What do you think.
I just don't have the guts to try it out, maybe a fear of failure. I also get caught up in minutae, and I'm trying to create all the HTML and PHP from scratch.
