Creating your own Article Directory for Adsense?

Has anyone toyed with this? Many seem to have done it horribly, leaving themselves open to hacking and letting spam through. I wonder if it would be lucrative to create one, even hands-off and let spam and spun articles through. I guess it would mostly be visited by spiders and not humans. Dunno, maybe create a niche specific one?

Has anyone explored this? I'm just now thinking about it and I'm sure that I've not explored all the angles. What do you guys and gals think?

I did this, wrote the app myself: FreeArticleHQ.com. I sold it for $500 about 18 months ago (PR 3 at the time). I ran it for almost 3 years, although the last year I'd pretty much given up on it and stopped reviewing articles.

I built it with 2 gates:

    Email confirmation
    Manual review

It was not a membership site. To sub an article, you did first name, last name, email, article, resource box. Once you subbed it, it sent an email to the email adress you entered. Click on the link in the email to confirm your submission and the article was flagged for me to review.

When I finally gave up on it, I was doing 30 - 40 articles a day, 90% of which were total crap.

Submitters paid absolutely no attention to the guidelines and continually submitted unreadable junk, spun stuff, keyword stuffing, too many links, non-english, you name it, they subbed it.

I had Adsense on it, but rarely saw any clicks. People showed up there for 1 reason - to submit an article. Once they'd done their business, they went on their way.

Think about it. How many articles in article directories do you actually see high ranking? EzeinArticles, HubPages, GoArticles, About.com - other than that, you're splitting up a small pie with thousands of other directories.

Despite my rant above, I honestly believe you could, with hard work and an unwavering focus on quality, build a good directory. But I dont think Adsense would be the route to go. If I had it to do over again, I'd go membership and figure out some sort of fee structure once I was able to get some PR and traffic.

As far as coding and running FreeArticleHQ - AMA

There are hundreds, if not thousands of these sites around and most don't make any money. Perhaps, instead of being open to every topic under the sun, it might be an idea to choose a nieche and focus soley on that. For example providing high quality articles on careers.

We started a career article directory about a year ago and the fist six months were really quite with adsense, although the article count was higher than it is now. We where approving and publishing too many articles that were not so relevant to our directory as we just wanted to get the article count up but then we realized that was not the right approach and we deleted well over 50 present of the articles and we are really strict approving any irrelevant articles or spinned or low quality articles.

After we cleaned up our directory the adsense earnings went up really well and continually growing every month. We still experimenting with the best placement and the colours but the current setup seems to be the best.

So if you decide to start an article directory then choose some niche as general article directories would be rally hard to get started. And at the beginning it can feel like you really want to get your article count up to start making some money but it would be better to concentrate on quality than quantity.

Now we only approve and publish about 10% of the articles we receive.

    inter123-

I might be jaded, but based on my experience with FreeArticleHQ, I don't think it matters what niche you try to focus on. The vast majority of article will still be crap and probably unrelated crap.

Start an article directory for fishing and see how long it is before the travel, credit card, teeth whitener and viagra articles start to show up.....

Yeah, I suppose once it gets put in an automated bot's database, your toast.

    True that.....

You might be able to go with some sort of captcha for subs though - that might filter all but the most hard core manual spammers.

I don't really think that the people who would submit articles would click on the ads, and I think the only traffic will be from people who are submitting articles

If you have the right ads then they probably will but that should not be your target anyway to get adsense clicks. You should really concentrate on off and on page SEO to get search engine traffic as that is where the clicks are coming form.

If you have good content on your article directory lot of people would link to it and the people who submit the articles usually build some links to the articles anyway to get them rank better.

Yep, I did this. No new content submissions, just content taken from other article directories. Basically it ran on autopilot.

Also, there's an article directory out there now that gives you (for free) a complete article directory package, including the software and article content, if you want.

I know the one you are talking about and it's a sure way to bounce in and out the index as your 100% dupe content site can't rank for anything. It's a nice idea, but I am almost 100% sure it will never work due to the dupe content issue.

I am starting a few directories and article directories next month, but it will be for SEO and link exchange purposes, not for the Adsense income. I got the idea from the BluehatSEO guy and I realize this is probably a very old strategy, but it makes a lot of sense to me. Eli from that website always states that each site should at least be able to pay for itself, which is domain fees and the time you spend approving links and articles.

I will focus very niche specific and see if I can snap up a domain with some PR, even if I have to pay extra for it.

I run an article directory - had one for several years now.

I used to run adsense, but made next to nothing out of it.

Thought of giving it up as the only people visiting it are article writers, thought better of it, and am now building up an email list of article writers.

Think about other ways of monetizing your article directory apart from the advertising.

        Cheers for now

Yeah, its not a formula I would recommend. There's a lot more profitable means available.
