How much power in a Wikipedia backlink?

I didn't realize my site was listed in Wikipedia until recently. I'm just wondering if it explains why my site stopped jumping around between #800+ to finally finding a stable spot in the top 50? What's the worth of a backlink from Wikipedia?

Excellent. Other excellent sources for back links are .org government institutions - Google ranks them very highly.

Do you have test data support this opinion?

Sure. But it won't boost you in the SERPs.

All links from wikipedia are nofollow, so no page rank is passed from wikipedia to your site. This means that google does not give any extra "credit" to links from wikipedia.

I'am thinking it probably helped your site, but not as much if the link had not been nofolllow.

Yes all Wikipedia links are nofollow, so you will not get any google juice as a result of that link. However, you may be getting traffic from that link, which is good. And the presence of your link in Wikipedia could perhaps influence other webmasters to include your link from their sites, so the viral value of a Wikipedia link may work out for you.

I have two links in the wikipedia pointing to one of the articles in my blog. That particular page does get quite a bit of traffic and decent placement in google.

Maybe what happened however was that when the wiki link went up it spawned a few other sites who were do-follow to find/pickup your site and link which would account for the jump.

Wikipedia is just another source of traffic, but like other nofollow links, it wont improve your ranking.

So I dont think it has anything to do with your site "stabilizing", Have you tried checking the backlinks to your site?

I had a cellphone software site that had one link off a wikipedia entry. That was my highest ranking traffic producer, even beating out google. I loved that link

Wow I never really though about wiki before! So to get a link you just need to have a website with unique information or what?

You just have to post a link to your site on a page. You can post it on just about any page you want. Remember, Wikipedia content is user contributed. That's why a Wikipedia link is nice, but due to the fact that it's nofollow it doesn't boost your pages in the SERPs.

So post away! Just don't count on it sticking. It could be removed seconds after you post it.

I have a few wiki links, I'm not sure how much it helps but for one of my websites one of my links is very relevant and I get about 10-20 visitors coming from it a day so that's pretty neat.

A lot of my wiki links elsewhere get constantly removed though, very odd.

I agree with that Matt Cutts guy, and yes, I currently have links to some of my sites on wikipedia.

Traffic isn't bad but for SEO I wouldn't get too excited over it.

You need to respect Wiki and not promote your own website to get traffic, place a link on Wiki if you think it really will help people to learn more about that subject. Anything else is spamming and destroying a great free online resource and it won't survive anyway as a mod will clean it up and contact you.

The information in here is a bit skewed...

In general Wikipedia is a no follow link, but that does not mean all their links are no follow. Listen to Matt carefully... You just have to do some research to find where the links are follow, and how to get them.

That I won't tell you. I've seen SERPs move directly due to wikipedia so I do have results to back up my statement

Well, it's not that hard to get Wikipedia backlinks to be honest. They give a little boost in visitors and that's about it. They get taken down eventually if they see you are using the site only for profit.

It's a user content controlled site so I'd expect nothing less.

Having relevant content stick is another matter too...

There are lots of people who regard themselves too highly and run promotions of themselves all over wiki only for content to be deleted.

It is difficult to get a link on Wikipedia. If you create your own link on a wiki they can ban you for spamming. If you are going to think about putting your link you had better make sure that your site is very very relevant to the content page you are being linked from.

As the link is no follow it's not going to be super in terms of link juice.

HOWEVER, with a Wikipedia link in the right place/context you can get some very healthy referral traffic. And that - at least to me - is worth a lot.

Wikipedia is the popular site among all the sites in the world. If your site got placed in Wiki then it is more powerful backlink than any other site which has your link as back link. Also lot of visits might come from wiki as well.
Back link in a powerful high PR site is always be more powerful.

    I fully agree.

I am very pleased with my wikipedia.org backlinks, they give my sites tremendous authority and trust.

I saw real benefits from all sticky wikipedia links, my competitors without one seem to have a hard time, trying to compete
