Can I rank a few pages of my site with original content when other pages are duplicated??

OK, Im looking at my Amazon business model a heck of a lot more.

However if I want to copy the content from Amazon and place on my sites detailed product pages, will this go against Google ranking my main domain page which is the breadwinner? Im guessing the answer is no, however I would like others opinions. I dont even care if these pages dont make it in Google's index, as they pages will be for customers, I just want my main domain page and a few others to remain in the index.

I have a top ranked site for Best Keyword Books.
The only links I have are internal.
I copied most of the descriptions right off amazon.
Does this break the rules? I don't think so.
Amazon readily lets you copy images, etc.
Does it look bad to google? (see above)

Notice I am not copying any editorial but what I believe
    are the publisher's descriptions.

If you link to amazon's products directly from your site, you
are in effect giving proper credit.

Duplicate content in this regard is a non issue, contrary to
all the myths about dupe content.

At least that's my opinion. What works for me and what I
get away with in no way means it will be okay for you.

edit: Dang I just checked my google rank and I am now #1, up from
    8th a month ago.

Build authority sites, people. That's my new mantra!

Thanks, I am currently doing some research into the dupe content myths. So much good and bad information on the internet about these sort of things.

I guess your experience disproves a few of them

    Thanks guys.

I have plenty of site that are loaded with amazon products pulled in directly from the amazon API (so directly duplicated from what they have on their site) and my sites rank very high.

Actually a lot of my inner pages that are duped from amazon rank high too.

It all boils down to the backlinks anyway.

I agree with the others. I have a PR5 site that ranks at the top of the second page for a very competitive keyword - combat stress - and I've built a few backlinks to it, but not much. It is a highly relevant site and I've actually cut and pasted a whole bunch of info from other sites because I thought their content was pretty useful to my visitors. I gave credit to them to keep from plagiarizing , but many of the pages are largely dup content. Not sure if that helps answer your question.

    Google ranks pages, not sites.
