Weird Google rankings

I had something really weird happen today...I've been working on SEO for an e commerce site, focusing on one keyword. I open up Firefox this morning to check the SERPs for that keyword and to my surprise the client's site was #1, meaning it jumped from #13 to #1 overnight.

But...I thought it looked suspicious so I opened up IE and performed the same search and they were still at #13. Cleared my cookies in FF, searched...back to #13.

Has anyone ever seen this? Any idea why Google would be falsely putting my client at #1 via a cookie?

    Ha, laughed my ass off

Ever heard of personalization, Google shows you personalized results based on your previous search history, that is why you saw the site at number 1 instead of 13!

I just hope you know what you are doing, for the sake of your client!

There is no need to be condescending.

      To the OP

Google will personalize your search results, signout of your google account when you see this happening and you will get true results.

      Hope this helps

Marc, i appreciate your thoughts, but this has nothing to do with being condescending. this guy is doing SEO for someone else as his client , and he doesn't know the basics. This is the reason why honest SEO's are being given a bad name. It's just plain wrong!

He should first learn and then try to do SEO, this way he can destroy someone's website!

well this happens all the time to my new website. I think it's because google will give the best result for YOU. If you were often at the site you are working for google will think this could be the best result for you.

That means they don't want you to SEO anymore...you are done, arrived at the top!
Just kidding. I always use proxies to get an 'unbiased' result. Try Pagewash.com, or Proxify.com or hidemyass.com. That could give you 3 different results, but at least they will all be unbiased and give you the best idea where you sit. Then again, depends on the data centre. Somewhere across the country may show different results from where you are.

I would recommend either using several computers (with different IP addresses - meaning different locations / routers) to get an accurate idea. Or, if you use adwords, you can use the "show ads" feature to see what your ads look like but in the process it will show you what the top 10 results are for SEO as well.

        It needs to be said...

Sometimes you can go to the top overnight. Sometimes you can
        drop overnight.

Sometimes you have to be condescending. Not out of meanness, but
out of tiredness. The veterans will know what we are "tired" of.

We've said it : Before you take on clients and pass yourself off as
        a pro........., well, I won't be condescending.

If you were disappointed in your results today, lower your standards tomorrow.
