Interesting Backlinking Tactic

So I've been using backlinkwatch to check out a possible competitor backlinks for a niche I am considering. This guy has a micro niche site that lists top for a term that gets 110K exact match searches a day. It's a crappy 4 page site etc but he is ranking top. I checked his backlinks, he has 502 backlinks but interestingly, about 40% of them come from sites like (I can't do links with so little posts but www - salonmazal - org). Now these sites appear to be nothing but one single page, filled with a random 2000 word article and then anchored backlinks dropped in at random. I would imagine an xrumor blast or something is then used to link that site.

Just wondering if any of you are familiar with the tactics, how you find they work. They must be quite expensive to run, but the ranking ability seems very very good.

Really? No-one? I've read a lot of IM related stuff and never even seen this method mentioned. Does anyone even have a link with an interesting read with more info about this tactic?

Go check the backlinks to the single pages back linking to him.

What you may find is he is using those pages to ring fence his money
site and sending thousands of back links to the single pages which in turn
    link to the money site.

When eventually he increases the PR of the single pages, that PR then pops
into the links to his money site.

I occasionally see this... It is clearly a spammy way of doing things...

Sites like this get by with it for a while within Google's algos, but eventually Google will get sight of them and take em down...

You need to be ready to pick up the pieces when he crash and burns...

p.s. Sometimes, you can help him crash and burn a little quicker... If you want to play that way...

Sounds like a bunch of article dump type sites, probably with a .info or something domain. They may work temporarily but don't have any long term weight.

OR, one could just focus on their own sites.

The people who report are the same people who got locked in their lockers in Highschool, and went crying to the teacher as we pointed at them and laughed :-0

That is a nice way of putting it...

p.s. In highschool, I was the kind of guy who if you did that to me, I had no concerns about cleaning my knife with your entrails... j/k

So you're saying you regularly stabbed people in high school? Interesting.

Edit: Just now saw your j/k. I now realized you were not being serious about actually having stabbed people in high school. Now I see that you were only joking about stabbing kids in their stomachs. My bad.

Tell me something whats so wrong with being fair?

Ya I would recommend that you avoid this practice and focus on less questionable link building practices. This will be great for you in the long term for stability.

How come so many here seem to be convinced that Google will slap this tactic any minute?

Is there any real evidence to support this or are these just assumptions?

Agreed Shane.....I don't think anyone person aside for the Google folks know for sure..

Chances are that these people know what they are doing and surely wouldn't be spamming their money site with all those links....most Black hatters will create a nice ring of Web 2.0 sites, squidoo lenses, article, etc to circulate the link juice to one site (buffer site) then point the buffer site to the money site.....if Google slams the ring in the rankings the money site doesn't really get taken down with it and the Black hatter just regrows what they lost in a matter of months or in some cases days (if they are really foolish).

There is a slew of black hat tools that can be used to create such rings. My advise would to be to focus on quality content and build solid, high pr, relative backlinks and hope that google gives your site promps in the rankings.

I mean I don't have any solid evidence that this is what that particular webmaster is doing but if it was me and going off the footprints you gave us I would say this person is taken this route to boost their rankings.

Next algo update might help/hurt their efforts....no one knows for sure..

I don't suggest reporting the person to Google because if they find out somehow (not sure if they can) find out you were the cause they might not be so nice towards your site.

I wouldn't have any concern over the linked to sites (i.e., the sites with incoming links). If it was that easy, you could just link to your competitors like that. Outgoing links can certainly get your site in trouble, as those are within your control.

Assumptions... Only the big G and people in charge of that know how these sites are handled. Bottom line is, focus on better content and then once your site makes you happy, focus on building inbound links..

There are 2 broad factors in play:

      * On Page SEO
      * Off Page SEO

Work on getting the on page sorted, then you can focus on the off page, and chances are you will, given time, beat out a nicro niche, set and forget site

It sounds to me like it's just a spammed site. Those backlinks won't last forever, and probably aren't very strong at all. Jump into the niche with this guy, and knock him out of the results with good old fashioned content and natural link building. If the search term gets as many hits per day as you say (which seems like a lot, so good find!) then you should have no problem getting people to link back to your site so long as you provide good content and keep working on it. I use article syndication to help with the linking of my sites, it takes a long time, but the links are very powerful. Just update daily and you'll eventually get up there and knock him out.

Many sites have achieved top ranking with highly competitive keywords by the use of this tactic, but I do not think this tactic is genuine and eventually many would fall in trouble in terms of Google slap.I would suggest have a site of a good quality, having good content so that the people are forced to link you back...used as a "link bait".

    Seems like a common method.

Can't see why this would be blackhat in any way?

This tactic has no problems that I see. This guy thats done it has keep his feet clean and hopefully written good sounding content for joe blogs to understand so he deserves to rank well for his efforts.

      Here's what I think

      BlueFart? 40%
      outsource? 30%
      whitehat? 30%

My main problem is that buddyboy that likes to accuse people shouldnt be around this forum with his attitude and respect other peoples' views and guys that like too talk about knives should become a saw doctor lol

Why in the world would going out and buying a domain then pointing a few links back to your site be black hat or grey for that cause. They own the domain so who's to say what they use it for? This nonsense of write awesome quality content and you will get the backlinks you need is absolutely the dumbest thing I've ever read. Here is the simple two step process to internet marketing as far as I'm concerned.
    1. Provide a site that brings value to the shopper with good products and content that educates them on that product. (the same as an authority site. Provide the answers they are looking for) If it takes 20 pages, then 20 it is. If it takes 50, or 100 pages, then take the time to create them. Once you have a quality site that helps the individual searching for what you have to offer then step 2.
    2. This is the part that has to be done to make money. Backlink the hell out of that quality site. Keep going until you hit #1. If your scared, then use buffer pages. If you don't want to annoy forums and other blogs, etc... then buy offers that will syndicate articles to there directories and blogs. Guest post on as many blogs and sites related to your site, or on any site for that cause and then hit those with the article backlinks from the networks such as ama, seo linkvine, uaw, niche platinum, etc.. Profiles isn't the only way. They work, but so does the article networks. The bottom line is that unless your ABC, or other sites on tv and well known sites you can do whatever you want and your not going to get enough backlinks just from all of this quality content.

If you follow step 1 like most people say and sit back with your thumb up your butt then you will have a really high quality content filled site that sits on page 50 and the only one that looks at it is you saying what the heck am I doing wrong??

    Just my opinion

I just saw another Progressive insurance advertisement on tv. Let's say that we all agree that they have a quality product for the sake of argument. In that case then they need to stop putting those annoying ads on tv and let me watch my program. They have a quality site and product so they should just sit back and let people come to them. Oh wait, once again that doesn't work.
