What should I do with my 500 word article?

Spin it! Put the original on your site and the other versions on article directories.

You don't even need to spin it. Put it on your site first. Wait for it to get indexed by the SEs. Then submit it to a few directories, with maybe a change in title but that's all you really need to do.

Always use your content for your own sites first.

Might as well spin it! Google doesn't always do a good job at citing the original source, even if your site had it published first. I would spin it and put it on articles, web 2.0 sites, and look at some pre-existing networks of blogs. The effectiveness of each method really depends on where your target audience is and the quality of your article.

Cleaning pro has the idea. You do need to spin it. Sometimes if you don't spin it they will get indexed, but eventually removed from the index. Spinning it will keep it in the index. So spin it a bunch then add the original as a page on your site and add the spun articles to as many directories as possible with links back to your site.

Bear in mind that to spin correctly and for it to be effective, you need to spin each sentence at least 3 times and then spin the synonyms. Some people spin whole paragraphs but IMO thats overkill.
I'd def go for the spinning option!
