A competitor site ranking 1st spot on page 1 has their domain expiring in a couple of days. This a PR4 homepage with over 1000 links. This is a service provider business, not affiliate marketing.

a) how soon after the expiration date will it be available to purchase

b) Will all links and pagerank stay after being changed to a new ip, webhost will stay the same.

Thanks guys

      Thanks Yukon,

I just finished reading about the process and phases that an expiring domain goes through.

I am still wondering about the links and PR. Do those links stay live?

      Thanks

I think you will lose a few links with the site going down for a while, but if you are able to jump on it and create a site quickly the links will remain active. I think the 2.5 months timeline above was also correct, not exactly sure though i've never been in that situation.

For all you know it is set to auto renew on their credit card anyways, so until the actual renewal date happens, it will show as expiring. Unless the domain is actually "FORSALE" I wouldn't waste a minute about trying to pick up an expiring domain.

No offence but when I read the thread title I laughed..lol.. Why your competitor will not renew his domain when he is already ranking at #1 spot? If he is ranking for a fairly competitive keyword which surely brings $$$$ then he can sell it for $$$$$. And also just theseoguys has stated above I believe the domain will get renewed automatically. Not just with credit cards but there are many hosting companies which provide free domain to the client and if that is the case then it will automatically get renewed by the hosting company on the last minute I can understand how you can feel at that moment..But sorry thats 99% possible..

If you know he's giving up the site anyway why not contact him and offer to buy it directly? If it's in your niche you could incorporate it into your own company pretty well.
