Are translated articles unique for Google

Just a quick question: If I get a random article in spanish online, go to google translator and translate it to English, and then go ahead an upload it to a blog for example (after making translation corrections) will this article be unique to Google?

Thanks

Never a good tactic to use...

But as for your question - I guess it depends. If it's 30-40% unique then it should be fine.

But still not a good tactic to use

Yes, as long as it has not already been published in English!
However, if you don't have the rights to re-publish it, then you could end up in trouble.

Oh I make sure I have the rights before re-publishing.

The reason I asked is because I tried this already, only that I got an article in English, translated to spanish, optimized it with a good KW, and I was ranking on page 2 for that KW and slowly climbing up the rankings. Then suddenly my site disappeared from the search engines. Other pages of the site didn't disappear, but the homepage that was ranking on page to disappeared and haven't seen it since then.

Do you think I was penalized for duplicate content?

@rickybuitrago: I have done this with plr articles and have ranked well in the past when I was targeting the hispanic market. I am almost sure thta there is no problem with google if you translate properly the article so that it makes sense. The problem could be if you are using an automatic translator in your site.

I am planning on doing this again since I see the hispanic market growing positively

By all means, just go for it as long as it is human readable.
