PPC Pro Question - Low Q Scores Even With Optimization

Hello guys,

Something is really puzzling me. I have been doing PPC for years now and every so often I run across a stumper. I will have a client that ranks very well in organics that will get a 2,3,or 4 quality score for the same word in Google Adwords. I just did a painters website and adwords setup and cannot for the life of me figure out why he is sitting with terrible quality that is making it impossible to get him any kind of volume or business.

Some mentionables in the campaings:
small groups of theme keywords i.e. "residential painting" words are seperate from "painting contractor" themed words.

A larged list of negatived keywords

mostly using phrase match

good campaign history

display network is off

ads are at about 1.5% CTR (can't figure out why so low after a ton of split test but I am assuming it is because of quality and ads are being shown down the page)

I am bidding my ass off ($16) max click just to get seen because he just wants the visibility and would still rather pay the high price.

I am not using single page landing pages, but the main page of the site or internal pages.

The site is built on a wordpress theme.

When I use the google suggestion tool for keywords it gives me extremely relevant keywords. What could be the problem?

Your ads are likely the problem. They are just not attractive enough, not giving the searcher a reason to click. CTR is 65% of Quality Score.

      I think the same way...

have you try to Improving your Web site's load speed, customer engagement, and information scent? those may translate back into a small boost in this Quality Score.

in addition to Lucids ctr option you mention a new site (i just did a painters web site)

it may also be those keys you are targeting are not connecting the dots to well and you may need some more content relating to the keys you want to target and yes ads that connect them all up > keyword > ad > site > keyword

Some questions that are useful to ask when you're not seeing good quality score include:

      1) How small and focused are my ad groups. Can they be smaller?
      2) Are my keywords also appearing in the ads? Not DKI, but really in the ads.
      3) Are my keywords appearing on the landing page as well? There needs to be a perfect correlation between keywords > ads > landing page.
      4) Do you have links into other parts of the site?
      5) Do you have a privacy policy on your site?
      6) Is my CTR good enough?
      7) Is the account history strong?

I've got a QS guide for reference if you want to PM me for it.

Other important part of your CTR and may be a little bit more subtle, it is the copy of your add, meaning, you need to talk to the customer on your add, no matter if you have the
keywords on your add or not, you just need to really focus on their problems they are trying to solve when typing the keywords they are typing example:

Lets spouse you are biding for a keyword like : divorce lawyers, most of the people will write and add like this:

    Divorce lawyers.

Call us now for a free consultation
    xxx-xxx-xxxx
    www.Iwillsmashthem.com

But if you write an add that appeal to their senses and
pinch the pain (even you dont use the keyword you are
bidding for), you will have outstanding results example:

    No more nasty fights.
    How will you feel when
    your son call her "mummy"
    www.Nomorenastyfights/lawyer.

Try to "touch" feelings in your ads more than "words"

It goes with the business at hand. You will probably never get much
        better.

A painting contractor is a different animal. It begs to be on google maps,
        yellow pages, servicemagic, angieslist, etc.

Anyone searching for a painting contractor is going to go for those.
The odds of improving any CTR are slim to none.

UNLESS you optimize for your city, location, etc. in the keywords you
are going for, include this certainly in the title and ad copy.

But the big boys own painting contractor, and I can't see doing much
better than you are. They are better off putting ads in the paper, phonebook,
        fliers, etc.

If you were disappointed in your results today, lower your standards tomorrow.
