Hey warriors just wondering... I've got a few websites set up that i have installed google analytics on.

I noticed though, the stats are completely different to those that i get from my cpanel...

Does anyone know which is more accurate?

Im going to flip one of these sites and I don't want to give people incorrect stats...

thanks for your help!

From what I know Google Analytics is used as proof when flipping sites so you can stick with that.

I also use Web Analytics in Real Time | Clicky for some of my sites. You try it out for free.

Clicky's awesome. I love it. The first month is awesome, but then you gotta decide whether or not to purchase it to continue some of the more advanced features

Google analytics is one option, but an easier one is to use your log files. Many free softwares can extract the data from your log files and give you a very accurate picture

Use Google Analytics for more information! Since you can analyze where your traffic came from, how long your visitors stayed on your website and many more.
And you can also use statcounter for backup because it is good in telling you the on going traffic for today unlike Google Analytics it just provide the record of the traffic yesterday.

Google analytics is 1 selection, but an simpler one particular would be to use your log information. Several free of charge softwares can extract the information out of your log recordsdata and provide you with a extremely precise image

In my opinion google analytics will give you detail traffic where it comes from. It is the best tool for traffic estimation. There are many tools available on the web for traffic estimation like ewebcountrer , statcounter but the best thing about GA is that you can totally rely on this as its form Google and totally free.

I noticed the same, there are big differences between cpanel and google analytics.

What do you guys think of wordpress site stats?

AwStats (along with the other cPanel stats packages, Analog and Webalizer) draw directly from the Apache access logs hence they are 100% accurate.

However they therefore include *everything*, including bots, script-based page hits, etc.

However Analytics runs via Javascript and as a result, thing like bots and scripts won't be included in the results (since they wouldn't execute the JS, or at least not to the point where a visitor hit would be recorded)

But yet, I use AwStats and Analytics since they are both accurate, but both provide a slightly different picture of things.

exactly what I was thinking, use both obviously. AW stats is nice in my honest opinion.

How do you set up AWStats?

Is there a simple way to do it?

I just had a look at the set up instructions and it seems to demand a high level of programming expertise. Thanks.

      UPDATE ON POST
Just discovered after chatting with Hostgator that the AWStats are already collected and awaiting viewing in the cPanel!! No need to do anything. For all of you newbies out there that are saying "huh?" to the mention of analytics, be not scared! Everything is done for you. Know how people find your website, by what search terms, is crucial in directing your future IM efforts. It tells you where the richer pickings are. It'll also tell you where its not. By knowing how your website is faring online, by way of arrivals from keyword seaches, you close the feedback loop. I would say over 95% of internet marketers dwell on putting up websites, doing good SEO, off page SEO etc ad nauseum. Almost no one tells you about how to tease out valuable gems of information from your analytics in order to tweak your site, constantly. Those who are in the know are not teaching others. At least, I haven't found anyone teaching the cybernetics aspect of keyword research. That keyword research can be done "forwards" and "backwards". Just my rant.

I use Google analytics and Awstats to check my traffic. But the data out of them are huge different. Once a time, I check a relatively new website of mine, Cpanel shows there are 874 hits and 175 unique visitors while Google shows 0 hit and 0 visitor. (the data is based on one week).

I don’t know exactly which one is more accurate? But I have to say I’d like to believe Cpanel is more accurate for the Alex traffic ranking increases in that week.

Google Analytics is the one we use on all sites.

I do not think any are totally 100% accurate, but I think GA is the closest or certainly most useful for us.

  • One thing is that no web traffic measuring tool is 100% accurate. However, Google Analytics is common because of the authority status of Google. In addition, with Google Analytics, you can filter the traffic to exclude certain regions and even your own visits to your site. Another good thing about Google analytics is that it can recognise traffic from bots and exclude them in your web traffic statistics. This is a feature that most other traffic tools do not have. A traffic report from Google Analytics is more likely to be accepted for site flipping.

Not STRICTLY true - for low traffic sites (most of mine ) I like to use a server-side PHP-based stats package called Tracewatch (Google it) - it's free, it's REALLY awesome and you see EVERY visitor, it's 100% accurate by definition, since the code is triggered as the page is generated on the server side. This DOES have an overhead - extra database hits and CPU time etc. but it's worth it for a small site.

It's great for new sites because you can watch each and every visitor at the beginning to see what's happening. I have spotted many an interesting activity that way. I get to see the instant Google fetches my sitemap, does the first crawl, etc. If traffic builds high then you can move out to GA (i.e. client-side, which doesn't thrash your hosting) because by then you are only interested in overall trends anyway.

E ', however, times when I need to be useful, and preferably a free SEO tool that can provide feedback on the success or failure of my SEO efforts.

There are 3 good ones I use with AWstats the best one by a mile and better vs Analytics and Webalizer. AWstats is also easier and quicker to do stats analysis (especially by using the nice charts) vs Analytics which is more time consuming, tedious and stores a relatively short history vs AWstats which goes back years.
