my website is a commercial site and I don't need a bunch of reciprocal links on it. Is there anyway to add a link somewhere without paying or reciprocal link?

Yup, make something worth linking to!

And some awesome link equity can be obtained by grabbing link partners.. whether it's from good high ranking sites or local businesses, it happens "in the wild" too so it's quite alright to do in moderation and not see penalties. Spread the links throughout the site rather than having a standard link partners page.

If I understand your question, you want backlinks from people without
giving them a link or paying.

That's exactly how google tells you to do. You get these links by
going viral, for lack of a better word. People visit you, they love
your site, you have things worth bragging about, and people add
your link to their page. Many, many, if not most, of webmasters are
not into any SEO or money. They are in it for the enjoyment of what
their site is about. They don't see any clouds when linking to people's
sites. They find a good link and post it.

A lot of us here know that. We get emails like, "great stuff! gave you
a shout out on my blog.." or other such stuff.

Funny too, the ones that say, "Can I please link to you?"

      However, that takes time.

A decent way of doing it is to find some personal blogs close to
what you do. Make a blog post. Ask the owner for a link. Find
      blogs that need guest posters.

Don't send out a spammy one line email. I get a ton of those.
They always get my standard reply: buy a link.

      Send a more personal message.

Nothing beats an authority page that people glean stuff from and
      post it.
