Question using multiple adsense ads

I read on the xfactor forum that he uses only 1 big box unit for adsense, and no more than that because that "ensures" that the top paying ads are being shown only. Now being an adWORDS user, i've seen that your ads can place in position from 1 to up to 9. So even with multiple ad units, wouldnt the top paying ads still be shown on your top unit? or how does this work exactly? Should i only have the one big box and take that adsense at the bottom of my page off? Will this increase click payout?
