normal back link? powerful back link?

Theres something that im not sure about and would appreciate your opinions on this.
I read in a very helpful manual that explained the process of getting "powerful back links" to your site
He explained that 1 original article gets sent to Ezine (central property) and you send a bunch of others to all other directories, with a link pointing to the previous post and another to the central property which has a link to your site.
Now. Question is . Do i rather have 1 "powerful" link? or should i instead point my links to my site instead of the central property.
I do not want my articles to rank, so i dont need the back links to ezine, but does it make ezines article link to my site more powerful?
