I caught his piece of news today.

BBC News - Google Instant promises live search results

Looks like a quite different way to return search result. Google tries to guess what you are searching and shows results as you go

Well that's really a good attempt, google has shown that its ready to take challenges and to face the competition it is getting from facebook.

Not sure what the deal is, I just saw the news blurb about this on the biz page of our paper but this feature has been active for quite awhile, don't recall anything about it just being in beta.

Nifty though because it can give you a quick idea of what's been searched for previously as you see the "guesses" appear in the drop down list and it does save a bit of time too.

Ahh... I got the following message when googling this morning:

"Instant search has been turned of due to slow connection."

I don't like this new feature. I only like that Google can index pages fast and for showing results i can wait a little more

I'm a little worried about what the impact to SEO will be.

For example, if I'm doing SEO for the phrase "wedding catering richmond virginia", I'm wondering how many people will stop typing when they get to "wedding cater..." and Google starts popping a bunch of results.

Basically, it feels like there might be impact to long-tail keywords.

I wonder how long it will be before someone figures out a way to anaylze the Google Instant keywords and writes a piece of software (selling for a mere $97, discounted to $37 for a limited time) to the SEO crowd so that you can make sure you're optimizing the right phrases.

This is also being discussed in this thread: http://www.warriorforum.com/main-int...l-players.html

The technology has been in use for more than a year already on the Google Toolbar...

If you use the Google Toolbar, then you will not find this change particularly disturbing...

Edit: I now realize that Google Instant is different from Google Suggestion Tool...

    I stand corrected...

Yes, but the Google Toolbar (at least the one I have on Firefox) doesn't take you straight to the results when you start typing; it just displays a drop-down list for you to choose from. You can choose one of their suggestions, or you can keep typing your search term. Either way, you're not going to be distracted by a search result.

I can see AdWords for popular, single word keywords becoming VERY expensive with this - especially if you want the top "sponsored result" right under the search box.

This is a good move by google on guessing on what we are searching

      What so good about guessing?
If i searh for a "pork chops" and i get result for "porn doll" thats kinda annoying.

I don't like guessing, guessing is the Google way.

I agree. This is very M$. Assuming that they know what you want.

I just tried "how to get pregnant fast" and had several different, totally non related search results displayed before even getting close to what I was really looking for.

I think it isn't a big deal. I thought this was incorporated quite long ago? Seems similar to google suggest to me.

I don't go to the google homepage to search for stuff but using firefox toolbar on the top.

Even when I searched, I didn't really look at what Google is suggesting.

I guessed what would really happen is that your traffic would be much targeted - traffic may be lesser bit a little but you may end up with a higher conversions.

The end of the day, if you are offering something of value, it doesn't really matter if Google change.

I wonder if this is about Web 2 and censorship? Will this make it any easier for them to block undesirables?

Has it been around for a long time? I have never seen the results change below the search box as you type - until today.

I am not clever enough to know exactly what impact this will have on search results and traffic but there has to be some sort of effect.
I for one will ensure my keywords are right at the front of titles and descriptions - which I already do. This makes it more important...... I think

"Google is betting all they have that speed is everything," Harry McCracken of technology blog Technologizer.com told the BBC.

If that is in fact what Google is betting I think they're missing the ball. In my opinion the trend continues to push toward socially recommended content.

"Saving one or two seconds isn't that big of a deal. One of my instant thoughts is that I am going to see results I don't want because until I type enough that it knows what I want, it is going to show me links I am not interested in."

I agree here, I'm not particularly fond of the idea of having content strobe lighted at me. However, if Google didn't start the auto-showed content until a certain number of words were typed (say 3 to 5) that might take care of this as the results would start off far more targeted, than say "weather" showing up when you start with "w" ... I'm sure they'll be testing this.

All in all I think it's only a matter of time before "searchers" completely move past traditional search engines with the type in phrase, and free and paid results show up below model. Amazing we've been on that track for so long...

    Thoughts?

i believe most of the people just search the term they are looking for, without even caring what google suggests. If they are unable to find what they are looking for or have no idea what it exactly is called then they will type slowly and wait for google to suggest, so i dun think it's a big deal, in this fast pace life no1s gonna wait for google to 'guess' . If iam looking for nikon Dxyz123 then i wont stop after typing nikon. But dats just me

  • The problem is now SEO is dynamic. Before, we could SEO for phrases that were searched in the past. Now, SEOers have to try and guess what people are typing in real time. If not, some one typing a longtail might stop typing when they see one of the instant results and forget about the phrase they were going to initially search.

It's gonna be different from now on.

Also, I believe this is about large brands. Start typing in single letters and you see brands come up. Type lingerie and you get the white page of death. But type VI and you get Victoria Secret.

      Could be, if this sticks.

Optimizing your sites more for the first few words of a long tail keyword might prove to be more advantageous than the entire phrase. Same goes for keyword rich domains.

For example, let's say "puppy food for golden retrievers" was a keyword you wanted to snipe... now it might make more sense to grab puppyfoodfor.com and focus on "puppy food for" anchor text backllinks... of course, you'll be getting a lot of traffic for people who want "puppy food for [insert breed]" as well, so your title will have to be well thought out as well as your content... you might be better off going for "puppy food for specific breeds" as your title, and having that page simply be a directory of links to specific pages for each breed.

I can definitely see navigation pages becoming much more prevalent if this sticks.

Anyway, people got in a huffy when Google had those vote buttons in the results and that was a flop... if this does stick, they'll be a nice window to enter in some extremely competitive markets while existing authorities are working out the kinks.
