Looks like Google maybe releasing some much larger ad units in the near future. Check out this video to see what I mean...
  • 960x250
  • 300x600
  • 728x300
It is going to be interesting to see how visitors react to them - they are going to be very 'in your face'.

You can find (barely) more info here - Watch This Space

    Fraggler,

Is this open to all AdWords members?

I've had experience of the Display Network through a media agency. It's quite easy to get lots of cheap traffic, but I found the quality tends to be a bit lower than a traditional network (especially those with retargeting).

As far as I know, the Google Display Network is the rebranding of a few of Google's different networks and the content network.

I'm not sure when these new ads are going 'live' but I would assume they are open to anyone bidding on Adwords.

Targeting traffic on the Content/Display network shouldn't be much different to your more traditional approach. It just requires a bit of research and a lot of data analysis. It is pretty easy to cull the pages that don't perform so you know you are only being displayed on sites/pages that will work.

Interesting. This will be big for publishers. It means more layout testing and optimizing.

Fraggler, that's why the wf rocks. People here are definitely
posting fast info on new stuff.

You're right. Barely more info. Looks like "above the fold" will
      take on a new meaning.

I'm wondering about the "smarter" description. I'm probably wrong,
but maybe this means better targeting or expanding ads to fill space.
      Maybe even a lay-over ad (?)

      960x250? Holy cow!

That is "huge" news, that's for sure!

I'm also wondering if the larger ads are an answer to smartphones, ipads,
and mobile devices. Small screens + normal ads = microscopic.

I'm guessing it means better targeting. What really would be game changing was if they offered retargeting depending on site interaction... Say for example if you clicked through on an ad and almost bought an item, then Google would serve a load of ads to that person to encourage them to come back and buy the product.

This currently happens on some of the more 'exclusive' ad networks, but if Google could offer it to everyone (no matter their budget) that would be incredible.

Absolutely! I have always felt a bit iffy about people who place 3 blocks side-by-side but it looks like Google might be encouraging the wall of advertising.[/quote]

That one I'm not sure about. Are they comparing themselves to other networks or is it a improvement on the existing system? Dynamic sized ads could be implemented in certain situations but the layout of the page is going to be the limiting factor.

You coudl be right. 960px is pretty much max width for a decent fixed width website so that would give maximum exposure on a smartphone. I'm still new to browsing with a phone so I don't know how many people would surf through ads while using a phone. I thought the phone is more for getting what you need at the time rather than general use. iPad makes sense though.

wow, idk if those would be good or not. I like getting clicks but at the same time I hate driving away frequent readers. These are almost STRICTLY for bottom of page or MFA sites.

I think that the current selection of formats are quite limited I could certainly use some of those new formats on some pages on some sites. Google should give more freedom do edit the unit sizes as needed, that would be the best option.

The current ad sizes are standard sizes for online advertising creatives. You can't have heaps of custom sizes as the advertisers still need to create the artwork for them.

Yes of course, it would not work with image ads, but with text links there should be bit more flexibility.

Any ideas on the launch date of the new dimensions ?

The huge ones will have to be pure image adds cause I cannot think of 10 text ads crammed in a huge rectangle.... That would really scream I AAAM AAAN AAADDD
