Either you are not in the first place or your keyword does not have so many searches.

Put up an adwords campaign ($5 max) for your keyword phrase and see how many impressions you get. This is the only true test to determine how many real searches exist.

Make sure your ad appears on page 1.

Might not be accurate....

Some of those traffic numbers/impressions could be IMers checking out the numbers. I know I do that every day, I like to see where my page is ranking....multiply that by a few thousand for competitive niches....

Don't forget there are probably about a million IMers in the world (and growing), if you take into account all the countries....

Welcome to the club...

Google search volume numbers are far from being accurate. Many people have the same problem you are having.

The only true way to know the exact search volume numbers for a keyword is by launching an adwords campagin for that specific keyword and seeing the number of impressions.

Hello,

I'm using G. Adwords Tool. I understand that they are giving estimated numbers, but this is far even from 50% of searches. 27.000 of searches and I get only 600 unique visitors per moth from first or second place. Today my site on the second spot, but there is no different, the same amount of visitors coming from 1 or 2 spots.

I just don't understand how can be so inaccurate data, from those searches I get only 2%, its obviously not an aprox figure. It's a big mistake, and when you're working on this project 3 month and see the result like that, you're wondering what is going on with G. and these numbers. It seems that we cannot trust shown numbers, and must recheck them.

I'm also afraid think about second my site with 100k which one takes a lot of time to push it to the first spot, and what if the scenario will be the same as with my 27k. site.

I'm going to open adwords campaign.

Which one you use? The legacy one or default keyword tool now which is in BETA? In my opinion, the BETA version is more accurate now according to my research and testing.

PS : You will definitely kick yourself hard if you are not using Google Insights as a conjunction with your Keyword Research effort. Google Insights will give you data of how well the search trend is for a particular keyword. If the keyword itself lacks of "real" searches, Google Insights will not show anything as it's not enough searches/data for that keyword. You really don't wanna miss this.

The number of hits you get also depends on how well written/targeted your meta description is. If the keyword you rank for is "baby furniture" and your meta description (which is what Google visitors see) is "Get cheap alternators online", you're not going to get may visitors, regardless of how many people search for that keyword.

Or, you could have a well targeted, but poorly written meta description, which will reduce those numbers as well.

Google keyword tool shows numbers that are far from being accurate. They are just an estimation. Always use google trends and google keyword tool.
Also keep in mind that those numbers contains also competitors searches and automatic rank checking software searches.

You have to understand the difference between real-world searches
done by real people for real keywords in real time on real computers...

If not, then no matter how many mythical searches you think are done
with your site being #1 or so is just pure speculation.

What google shows in that regard is given as a number that takes a lot
tweaking and estimation.

The proof of the pudding is in the eating.

Your stats are just about right.

I have started using google trends, and I got a question, is it better to write a keyw without quotes or with quotes? Because then it shows different data.

I've found search estimate tools to be notoriously unreliable - generally speaking your own stats/income figures are the only truly reliable indicator.

Thats true! If you are on the First or Second place for the keyword, and you have a low amount of visitors, Then you can't do anything.

You can complain if conversion rate is low and you want to improve it.
You can complain if Visitors are Plenty but Pageviews are Low.
But if you are not getting visitors from the first spot on google, you can't do anything! That suggests that the data is fake (about search Volume!).

there is no problem on the part of SEO!

Or target Different Keywords!

Double check your ranking by searching through a proxy like pagewash.com or any other. Your ranking could be in your cache or cookie if you have been searching yourself often. I thought I was #1 once...nope...actuality was 14. Always make sure you are logged out of your Google account too.

Have you checked your ranking using Scroogle Scraper?

You may not know but there are hundreds of data centers around the world for the google.com domain. Scroogle lists the US results.

Login to your Adwords Account, then run Google Keyword Tool to Check Your Keyword. I'm sure you'll find different result.

Also check the keyword trend. be sure the keywords doesn't get decreased trend.

Google's data isn't all that accurate. Sometimes it can show low volume when in fact it's much higher and vice versa.

Make sure you're logged out of any Google accounts when you search for your site. Google personalizes your searches and if it notices you going to one site again and again then it will give that site a higher rank when it knows you are the one searching for it.

Also, check the keyword tool again. I brought up a site that it said had 18,000 monthly searches. About a month later my site was doing well (#3) and I wasn't getting hardly any traffic. I checked the keyword tool and Google had changed the monthly searches to 560 >.<

Today I have checked my "100k" keyw with G. Adwords Beta version, and it shows 260 local searches!

Two weeks ago the numbers were about 100k.

The older version still shows 110k.

No wonder why I do not get any traffic from 5 spot. My friend's site with 60k searches from 4 spot gets about 100 visitors per day.

I think you should check your site ranking using different servers.. like you can use proxy sites from you country and then check googl in that search with your keyword and check the ranking in that... because some times it hpns that you have different results on different servers...

As your sites appears for you in the SERPs is probably not the same as it appears for others. To get exact results of how your site is ranked, make a search via a free proxy site (e.g. hidemyass).

I'd like to add another tool to the conversation - GWT (Google Webmaster Tools).
If you check under "Your site on the web"->"Search queries", it actually shows you how many impressions your listing showed when someone searched a keyword and how many times it was clicked.
It shows the average position rank for that keyword, as well as the CTR (Click Through Rate).
I don't know how incredibly accurate it is (it is Google after all), but it's a starting point.
It takes a while for the data to gather, but it's very revealing.
The keywords used to find your site help you understand what people are looking for.
You could write a description tailored to accommodating those keywords.
Use this data with Google Analytics, sorted by time on site, and you found your personal magic keywords.

Which brings me to your click through rate... If searchers are not clicking on your search listing, the simple answer is usually the correct one - your listing isn't what they were looking for.
Your title+description is literally your sales copy as in PPC. It's a combination of the right keyword density, relevance, and something that screams "click me!"

BTW, not many people use quotes when searching.
More savvy users use quotes when they first can't find their answers without them.
But they're not the majority.

Quoted searches are often times used by marketers guesstimating their competition.

Back to the same old question - how accurate is the Google number set? I am assuming that you know the rank that you are talking about - have checked through good old proxies like my favorite one http://www.pagewash.com or another people's favorite Hide My Ass! Free Proxy and Privacy Tools - Surf The Web Anonymously ...

Not much that you can do except for run a low cost Adwords campaign before even you begin your SEO to get an estimate of actual traffic... Sad - I mean, surely this is one of the easier stats for Google to measure!

I'm with you FredJones... Why can't Google present accurate data?
They control their search engine, dbs, etc.
If they could track where, geographically, queries are coming from, you'd think they could just add a tick mark to that search term.
