I took a look over at the SEO section and didn't see a post on the topic, but i believe this is a topic of conversation more then just SEO, it is our business. Google is our business.

Google Instant, the new search engine is now launched and is definitely creating a stir amongst webmasters comparing the pros and the cons.

For those that have no idea what I'm talking about check it out here;

Google Instant: A More Innovative Approach to Search - Inside AdWords

-------------------------------

How is it going to change the game?
  • Long tailed keyword searches will take a definite hit, people will be more reluctant to click on the less revelevant searches that instantly come up, rather then type out the entire long tailed search.
  • Adword Impressions are going to increase
  • Optimization will change, we are now going to have to optimize for letters lol
--------------------------------

I would like to hear your thoughts on the topic.

    Hey,
In the AdSense section of this forum are already 3 threads about this topic but I will share my thoughts here

I don't think that SEO will be touched by Google Instant as much as many people think. I have already figured out to profit by Google Instant and it works quite good.
We have to live with GI because I don't think it will be removed due to its popularity to users.
One problem could be that the impression count will explode. For AdWords users and what will be more important for us the number of searches of a keyword will rise. So will these numbers still be worth something in a few months?
And of course all the long tail websites may see an decrease of visits. I already can confirm this with one of my websites ... That's really awful ...
I just released my free eBook about Google Instant where I share all my thoughts to this topic. Watch out my sig.

I am looking forward to all the others posts here.

This may or may not be the case. Personally I think after a few weeks most people will be tuning out the dropdown and flickering updating results in the background as they will go back to simply typing in what they are looking for.

I haven't used Google Suggest on even 0.01% of my searches since it came out two years ago. I only use it when I cannot spell something or can't think of a good phrase to find what I'm looking for.

99 times out of 100 when I go to Google, I know exactly what I'm after AND I have a good idea of what I need to search for to find it. I can type the entire longtail phrase faster than I can type a couple letters look at the dropdown, continue typing, etc. until I find what I want.

I think most web savvy users will do this. They'll realize that it is there as a tool in the rare cases they cannot remember how to spell something or can't think of a good search phrase to give them their desired results.

And it could be the Google Instant will get people to select more long tail keywords from the list than were entered in the past if the list is a good prediction. They might have settled for searching only for the head term in the past and digging through lots of web sites to find what they were looking for because they didn't know enough details about the topic to know what long-tail phrase to search for to jump right to their answer.

The jury is still out on this one. Could go either way.

Adword Impressions are going to increase
    That is a definite.

Optimization will change, we are now going to have to optimize for letters lol
If you make the mistake of optimizing for letters then you don't understand Google Instant. The dropdown might show the most popular keyword phrase that starts with a particular letter or sequence of letters... But the SERPs that are flickering and updating in the background are for complete keywords or keyword phrases... NOT letters.

This one you don't have to worry about.

That is so right. Fact is, that Google Instant only suggests full keywords or phrases. So as you already said the results are the ones of the shown phrase. Only the keywords or phrases we have to optimize our pages for will change, not the optimization itself.

Actually it should have no impact on the number of impressions according to Google.

They will only log an impression on an advert when the user stops typing for 3 seconds or longer, or they click away from the search box (either on a result or an ad etc), so your impressions shouldn't be impacted at all.

I dont think PPC will benefit at all, why would it, natural results are now faster and tailored to shorter keywords, so it will either stay the same or get worse for ppc adwords.

Some PPC ads absolutely will benefit - those that manage to position themselves above the natural search results (instead of to the right).

If you've seen any of those, especially when there's more than one, they pretty much dominate the entire screen (because most of the visible screen is taken up by the suggestions and the ads). In those instances you get 1-2 natural search results showing up, the rest of the screen is paid for advertising.

If Google kills natural search and we have more PPC clicks then its not a search engine, Bing will take over

I feel that some will benefit from google instant, others will suffer. It takes a little getting used to. Personally it has not changed the way that I search, i still type out my full search terms.

I find google instant more annoying than anything and will probably disable it soon.

Anyone else with me on disabling it?
