Getting your site ABOVE local results map?

I was wondering if anyone has had success getting their site ranked above the local results map on Google? Sometimes I see listings above the map, and sometimes I don't. On searches where the local business results map is #1, can you get your site above it? I am not talking about being the top listing within the map, I am talking about an organic listing ABOVE it.

Anyone done this?

What "organic" listing above the map are you talking about?
Those are adwords customers who are top ranked.

Are you talking about normal listings below? Those have been
SEO'd for the relevant location and business. Some national
businesses rank quite well for local as well, as they have offices
    all over the place.

He means the "local search" listings which are sometimes referred to as "7-pack" or 10-pack" you'll see these are certain keywords which have Google Map profiles showing up for specific local city keywords.

And to answer your question, absolutely! Yes you can outrank them.

        Hi Brad,

I'd love to hear you elaborate on your statement that you can outrank them (the 7 or 10 pack).

I was under the impression that the listings that appear above the 7 or 10 pack were completely up to Google's discretion and that they are just "experimenting" when they do this.

Sometimes for some searches they will place results above the local listings and sometimes for other searches they won't. There's no real rhyme or reason to why, when or for what keywords they will do this for.

Would you kindly share your super-ninja trick with us?

        Thanks,

        Aaron

It's not so much of a trick as it is just outranking the local search pack. You'll see some SERPs with sites above them, and others with the pack above the organic search results. Sometimes there is only one site above the rest too. This just means that if your site have enough of the equation right you will outrank the pack

With intention-based results chances are a handful of keywords are dang-near impossible (or possibly impossible) to outrank.. like 'city, state abbreviation Pizza' where Google knows what you are looking for.

    Paul,

In some local searches (though not many that I can find) there are 1-3 organic (not adwords) listings above the local map results. So there will be adwords results, then 1-3 organic results, and THEN the local business map.

I am wondering, on results where the map is first (no organic listings above it) can you jump ABOVE the map? So if you were a local dentist, could you get your site to jump above the map?

    palpatine,

Yeah, it seems sometimes there are organic listing above the map, and sometimes there is not. Someone told me that if Google is not certain whether or not it is a local search, that they place organic listings above the map. I have no idea if this is true, but that is what I read.

      RioNomad,

Thanks for your reply, but I'm pretty sure they know or else they wouldn't be showing the 7-pack at all.

My page ranks above it, but only if you search for my business name. It doesn't do it (yet!) for a keyword search. But, it didn't used to doing this, so my SEO work must be paying off!
