Remember google likes content, at least it says it does

Get your target keywords picked, then onsite optimize, such as page titles, meta descriptions, keyword density etc and site links inside your site (layout)

Then external building like bookmarking, blogging, articles etc - get good contextual links and one way links to your site.

If you're looking at keyword research then the free choice is the Google Keyword Tool

    https://adwords.google.com/select/Ke...rceLegacy=true

If you want a program to help with keyword research then I recommend Market Samurai, it gives you all the stats you need and suggests related keywords. Certainly doing research on getting a good keyword phrase is the first step toward good SEO and can make a huge difference on how well your site does.

Choosing the right keywords is only one step of the process to helping you rank higher in the search engines. The best keywords for you, will be those that are the most targeted to your content, and equally, those that you can rank for without having to do a lot of link building.

As it was suggested by others, use Google's keyword tool to get an idea of the search volume of the keyword phrases that you believe to be oriented around your content. Make sure that you select the "exact" function so that you know how often your exact keyword is searched and not some variation of it. If it has the volume that you are interested in, then search for the term yourself in Google or whatever search engine that you are trying to rank in...Google preferably.

All you are interested in at this point, are generally the top 5 positions (depending on the search volume). If in those positions, are sites that you will be able to outrank with minimal effort, then you may consider using that keyword. The next step would be to optimize the particular page or site that you are using for that phrase. This would include the keyword density in the content itself, meta information, page title, article titles, tags, H1,2,3, alt tags in images and so forth.

Then, it would be time to begin building links to that page/site; using anchor text when possible. I wouldn't suggest purchasing a tool to help you with link building until you truly understand why and what you are doing and how those particular backlinks will help help your site rank. A tool is just that, a tool. They are created to help you automate mundane tasks, but are worthless if you don't understand the reason behind using them.

There are many SEO related link building services online, and you can find them on many forums. You'll need to be careful on which services that you choose, especially when it comes to link building. However, take the time to read reviews and select the service that you think can best benefit you, and you should see some positive results. Though, as with the automated tools, the best results will come from how well you have optimized for your keyword with onsite SEO, and from how selective your were in choosing the keyword itself.

I hope this has at least helped to point you in the right direction. Take the time to learn about these things and save yourself a lot of time in the future, as well as money...

I agree that the Google tools are really useful. I think its worth going to your top competitors and checking their source codes. They may have missed out on some keywords that you can capitalise on.
