What tools to use instead of Google's? (Analytics + Webmaster Tools)

Hi,
this is mainly a question Tom Goodwin but also all other experts in this field.
The question resulted me reading this thread:
http://www.warriorforum.com/adsense-...-backlink.html

To be honest, I always thought that it is a bad idea to use Google's tools or services WHEN doing lots of SEO (any of Google's tools and services which is a lot, Google is penetrating almost every part of the internet which makes it more and more dangerous or potentially dangerous if you are concerned about issues like privacy etc.).

So far I haven't done an awful lot of SEO (that's why the issue wasn't too pressing) but I do plan to start doing significantly more SEO now. And thanks to Tom Goodwin (when reading his posts in the above thread) I got reminded of those issues, but the big question is:

What can we use instead of the omnipresent Google Analytics? (and also what are *good* alternatives to other useful tools that Google offers with it's Webmaster Tools?)

I know Google bought the Urchin company which had the analytics and renamed it in "Google Analytics." And of course, they kept developing it.
(Google bought and keeps buys many very good companies which all become part of Google which quickly become a pain in the rear if you realize how much information Google can gather through all those tools. By gathering all that information they can create a VERY exact profile of a person or company which is frightening. Anyway, I digress.

So, please, anyone with experience in this market, please share GOOD alternatives to Google's tool.
I've tried some alternatives in the past but the problem is:
Even though they are lots of alternatives for every single of Google's tools, quality/price are HUGE issues.
There are many free alternatives, but as soon as you start using them you'll realize that most are either total garbage or don't update as frequently as needed or have huge security holes or slow down the website/server etc. etc.
The paid alternatives on the other side are often VERY expensive. Like thousands of dollars etc.

So, PLEASE... ONLY post alternatives that you either used/use yourself (and know that they are good)
or can cite an authority that uses them and can vouch for them.

I'd really appreciate this information.
Many thanks in advance!

The very first thing that I notice when I enter the website of GetClicky is that they use GoogleApis.com
Now, can you guess who GoogleApis belongs to and what it does?
      That's my point.
If you use GoogleApis (or a company that uses it) you might as well use Google Analytics because with GoogleApis.com Google will know EVERYTHING about you including the color of your underwear and you girlfriend's underwear. And also Google will know what you had for breakfast, for lunch and for dinner last week (and 4 weeks prior to that) and exactly where you were eating, facts that probably don't even you remember anymore...

      P.S.
Usually I have all scripts from GoogleApis.com blocked in my browser. (can activate them with 2 clicks if I want or need to). But more and more websites nowadays start using this "free" Google tool.
In my opinion, however, "free" tools like this are very expensive. Too expensive.

Statcounter is a great program except for the 500 log size restriction for free members.

Even with that it's still one of the best real-time analytics program I've found.

I don't really the point in trying to avoid Google... The truth is that Google is everywhere and there isn't much you can do about it.

You know... some crazy scientists did an interesting experiment the other day...
They put a frog into a pot with hot water and naturally the frog instantly leaped out of the hot water (otherwise it would have died).
But as you might guess scientists are crazy people and so in another experiment they put the frog into a pot with cold (i.e. normal temperature) water. So, the frog has remained sitting in the pot. But then they started to gradually (very very slowly) increase the water temperature in the pot...
Very very slowly the water in the pot started getting hotter and hotter until it started boiling.

Now, here is the pop quiz question for you:
Guess when did the frog leap out of the pot in this second experiment?

          Answer:
Never. The increase of water temperature happened so slowly that the frog never felt uncomfortable... until the water was boiling. And guess what happened then?

WOW, that is a really great story...

But I don't see how it is connected in any way with what you are talking about...

Do you really think Google is slowly and gradually killing you and me and everyone else using their service?

QFT. Google already has a ton of data and access to most anything they want to know. They are a registrar as well as a DNS, so if they want to find your network or link farm, then they have the tools already.

I see Woopra has already been mentioned, but it is a great service with a lot of similarities to analytics for free if your site isn't getting over 1000 uniques per day as mentioned.

Well, I don't know about you but Google is certainly NOT my domain registrar neither do I use their DNS.
So, no they can't do what you claim above (at least in my case).
And I hope you aren't trying to imply that just because Google happens to be a domain registrar they would be able to access all the private data of all the other domain registrars. Google accesses the same public information (regarding domains) that everyone can access. No big deal if you use a privacy protection service such as this one:
Namecheap.com - WhoisGuard - Privacy Protection for your domain registration data
for example AND make sure you don't have all of your domains sitting on the same IP/IP block.

Thanks, going to check them out.
Although free is appreciated, it doesn't have to be free. I'd much rather pay money for a service instead of using one of Google's supposedly "free" services. Because as I said above, Google's "free" services are WAY too expensive IMO.

Google cannot find you out if you have private registration on your domains. Yes, they are a registrar but registrars only have access to private domain information for domains that they control.

So, if I have several domains with private registration at Godaddy, only Godaddy can look behind that private registration...no other registrars can do so.

If you are doing something you don't want big G to know all about, then private registration, avoiding Adsense, analytics, and webmaster tools, will do the trick in most cases.

            Hi jeff,

Hey..thanks for that one- it's very usefull and better than statcounter. I tried it out having seen your post..great!
Before I start wading through the FAQs at woopra, maybe you can help...
When the "live" stats are shown on the desktop software, they disappear after about 30 seconds and I can't seem to view them again.
            Have you noticed that?

            best regards

Is there an alternative to setting up one of these analytic programs on each website? Meaning, some folks only have a few sites while others are approaching triple digits and beyond. Sounds like a little bit of work to add the code to each website.

There is a GREAT free Google analytics alternative called Woopra over at woopra.com. It has everything you need, plus it gives live stats so it has one up on analytics in that regard.

I stumbled upon it while obsessing over one of my sites, I didn't want to wait 24 hours for an analytics update. The free version is limited to 30,000 page views a month but unless your running a site with that kind of traffic its fine, the paid version is pretty cheap too ($5 for 100k up to $99 for 3 mil).

Well, I notice hitslink.com gives good and thorough traffic tracking also. The definition of a unique visitor is the same as what google analytics will give you.

I used to rely on awstats but found the unique visitor numbers far different and higher than the ones reflected on analytics of hitslink.com.

Just check it out. I'm neither affiliate or associated with them. They are a paid service though with 30 days trial.

Love that vid! Sent it to everyone I know when I first found it!

I may have misspoken earlier, but I'm not entirely convinced that the big G might not have relationships with certain registrars (Godaddy?) where they could obtain domain whois info even if private. This is only a suspicion, and perhaps it's time for me to locate my tinfoil hat.

I don't think Google could sniff GoDaddy's private data, but registering anything with Godaddy is a very BAD idea anyway.
I mean, if your registrar is Godaddy you could lose any of your valuable domains in a blink of an eye for (almost) no reason. That's not exactly something I would want for my business domains.
But even for some hobby domains, Godaddy is such a pain in the a$$, I would never consider using it.
