Hello forum,

(sorry for my englisg i'm french )

In the ranking of one of my website, I see something strange
I am #11 and one of my competitors #5
I do not understand this position:

My Website: 273 backlinks - 81 pages indexed - Good OnPage optimization (title - alt - H1 - content > 300 words ..) Domain create : 30.07.2010.
My competitor: 0 backlinks - 7 index pages - Poor OnPage optimization (title no - no alt - no H1 - poor content <100 words) domain create 30/08/2010
But better rank than me, how it is possible? A site with no backlinks and poor optimization..

Thank you for your reply.

Is it the root domain ranking or a page within the site? Maybe it has a ton of links to the domain, but less to the actual page.

Maybe it has strong backlinks that just aren't showing up. Maybe your backlinks are really weak. Are you over optimized?

Have you checked rankings being logged out of Google? Check rankings with Scroogle.org?

It is not always necessary that you have too many backlinks, so you get a high PR. Your content has to be worth it also. Plus, do keep a check on equal backlinks on DOfollow and nofollow links.

Is their site on an older domain?

Do they update their content regularly?

Are they using social media to push their site on local listings?

The crapiest looking website can out perform the slick young gun if they are using the above.

Honestly, it's not all about the backlinks and seo. It could be a number of things. This site could also be utilizing paid services to boost their page rank.

You're not the only one experiencing this... this is common.

Are you using anchor text in your links for the phrase or term your competition out ranks you on? If not then your inbound links aren't helping you as much as they could be.

It may be one of the two:

            (1) A temporary push that your competitor has received - if so then it will fall down and settle.
            (2) Your competitor has a good number of new backlinks that are yet to show up - but will appear showing up in the tools.

And there is a third possibility too - that, they have a domain redirect - some other trusted domain is redirecting into this one.

I have seen each of the three happen across different examples.
