Could anyone offer some advice on SEO?

I have been studying, experimenting with web design, and also working for a communications company, where I do some basic web design and other related tasks; I have been working as web production assistant since about a year and a half now. I have some javascript knowledge and I have pretty great knowledge in areas like HTML and CSS too. There is this client who wants to give me his project and he wishes to get his business website optimized through SEO. On major search engines, he wants me to get his website ranked on the top and I think it's a great opportunity. Which SEO methods should I use?

      I personally follow TWO rules for my own SEO practices...

      1. always building links and being extremely consistent...don't procrastinate...don't slack.

      2. Patience...SEO is a waiting game.

      If you know the basics of SEO...then these two rules will get you to success.

      I used to think SEO was hard...but the principles are very simple...it's the consistency, the patience and waiting which is sooo hard.
