You will have a Home Page, or index page. That will be "on page" SEO'd for your keyword. SO, you'll have the keyword in the...
    -Domain name
-URL (for other pages other than the Home)
    -title tags
    -H1, H2, H3 tags, etc.
    -description of the website
    -meta keyword data
-AND the CONTENT you write on the page.
-and linking from pages on your website to other pages on your website using the keywords as anchor text.

This is how you try to rank for a specific keyword.

You will have this on page SEO for every page on your site. BUT, since the pages will all be linked to from your home page, it will get the highest rank. (without discussing back linking yet)

Now when you write articles/comment in forums/etc... and link to your pages on your site, those pages will rank higher in Google (in a perfect world). So the more links, the higher it ranks.

So you are asking, how to get around ranking for similar keywords that aren't quite the same keywords you are trying to rank for? You DON'T get around it. You WANT to do this exact thing.

You want to rank for a 1st keyword for the Home Page, then a few other keywords that are related closely, or other versions of the 1st keyword for the other pages.

At least that's what I do. Others may structure their sites very differently.

...even as I finish writing this I want to talk about so much more...not sure if I answered your question or not.

yes you did, thank you, but there's still something I'm trying to understand:

Do you have to have many "articles" or "pages" in your website (targetting slightly different keywords) other than the "article" or "page" that is specifically targetting the keyword you want , in order to rank for your main specific keyword?

No, you don´t have? You can rank also with a single-page-website with your specific keyword. BUT you can rank with the different keys as well and get more visitors.
