I experienced the same discrepancy; found a 'great' keyword with 120,000 searches per month and no competition; built a whole site around it with a product. The site went #3 in google almost instantly; guess what - barely any traffic. I do a keyword check again and this time keyword tool shows like 1,000 searches per month LOL

Well, unfortunately although Google might not be super accurate with it's search volume, they are probably closer to correct than any other keyword tool. I mean, it is their search engine after all.

There have been numerous threads concerning this. In short, the old Google Keyword tool was pulling the search data not just from its own database but also from their search partners. This data was highly inaccurate. The new tool only lists information on searches made through Google and Google alone. This new data is far more accurate. Hope this helps.

Where did you find that info? The webmasters blog? I'd like to check it out. Thanks.

Also, if you're doing keyword research for SEO and not Adwords, make sure you check exact match only. There isn't any broad match for SEO.

The new tool is still incorrect but as least it is more closer to the real numbers then the last one.

I’m not too crazy about using Google's new Keyword Tool for keyword research.

The best keyword research I believe comes from Google Suggest.

In fact, we’re offering a free software tool that scrapes Google Suggest from our blog.

You can download it for free here: market-vantage.com/2010/10/free-keyword-research-using-google-suggest/

Google's keyword tool is more accurate now. I believe in the earlier version, it was pulling traffic statistics from several locations.

Basically, this tool provides more accurate results than the previous version, in one way or another.

Not sure on the exact details, on the differences between the two besides the interface but I'll see what I can find.

I read something on their Webmaster's Blog about it.
