its not about the amount of keywords. The only thing that effects rankings is competition, how good your seo is on page and off page. # of keywords has got nothing to do with it.

But for now just work on the 10 biggest keywords.

It depends on the goal of your keyword usage. For rankings too many will dilute your rankings, for ppc and cpv the more the merrier.

50 keywords? That sounds like the start of a great site! You just have to create a page for each keyword (use multiple on a page if appropriate) now...

Your site doesn't need to be made in one go. As mentioned above, start with the best 10 keywords and get the content created and the promotion started before focusing on the others. While those ones are moving up the ranks (it does take time), you can spend your time on writing content for the next 10 keywords. Just keep repeating the process until you have exhausted your keywords.

Once exhausted - go find some more.

Before starting, group your keywords into strong categories that will make the site easy to browse for the user. It is best to get this right from the start.

Don't negelect the pages once they are on page 1. Your goal should still be to get each page to the #1 spot.

It's not a problem, it's just a lot of work. You don't want to end up targeting many keywords and ranking for none.

There is no limit to the number of keyword phrases your site can target... But you don't want a single page to target 50 keywords phrases.

It's much easier to make 50 pages rank well for 1 keyword phrase each than it is to make one page rank well for 50 keyword phrases.

Why? If you use a separate page for each keyword phrase then that keyword gets it's own title, h1, h2s, content, URL, etc. that you can use to help it rank for that keyword phrase.

You can't put all 50 keyword phrases in a single title, single h1, page name portion of the URL, etc.

You should target 1 keyword phrase per page (maybe 2 or 3 phrases if they are almost identical like Refinance , Refinance Mortgage, Refinance Loans).

Exactly.. A webpage can't be about too many different subjects and still be "most relevant" in the eyes of Google.. So 50 keywords equals 20-25 webpages.. You need all the above on-page factors to be just right.. and the keyword density as well.. The text should be SEO friendly..

@Thomas - The standard response is that you should really only try to focus on 2 - 3 keyword phrases per page.

I would go with something along the lines of @Fraggler's message and make a big list of the keywords you want to target.... Then you can use that list to create a sitemap that will dictate the pages you will create content for.

Its all about research. There is not much point in trying to rank for massively competitive keywords where the site has spent vast amounts on development. Find less competitive keywords and build your site around ranking for these. Not all keywords will pay but you have to test the waters to find the paying keywords.

Keyword is the main part of page optimization. First, you must check the keyword density. you can take keyword density of 3-4% and 5-7 can be promoted specific keywords for each page. Or if you have several keywords to use key phrases. key phrases to attract more visitors to the destination site.

It depends on the number of pages you have at your disposal. In theory, you could target one or two keywords per page on your site, but in practice, this is a very difficult exercise.

      Hi Thomas,

There is no problem targeting 50 keywords or even 500 keywords. The wise way to promote a list of keywords is to focus on one or two at a time. Promote your primary keyword until you have pushed it to the first page, then move on to the next keyword, repeating the process for each keyword on your list.

If you spread your efforts over too many keywords at the same time then it takes much longer to see any benefit. It doesn't help much to go from page 50 to page 4 of SERP, either position gets you virtually nothing. Concentrate all your efforts on a single keyword until that keyword is generating traffic, then move on to the next keyword.

The problem is not the number of keywords you are going to be targeting but the content, if you are going to stuff the 50 keywords on a single page that will be a problem, not for the Search Engines, but for the people and at the end they are the ones that buy, I would suggest you to attack first 10, and moving from 10 to 10.
