You'll never get #1 in anything by 'playing around'. People pay thousands of dollars and spend hundreds of hours just to get to the first page on the SERPs.

It's a very serious, time consuming enterprise.

That being said, you'll need a LOT of traffic, a LOT of original content, and a LOT of patience.

And a little luck never hurt.

Best to you in your endeavor.

First, make sure you have chosen keywords that are going to pay off the most. The keywords you choose should justify the effort it would take to rank for them. Generally you want to choose high payoff keywords (high intent to buy if selling a product or high paying if selling ad space), high traffic keywords, yet more uncompetitive keywords. There is a balance you have to strike between those factors because usually the best most profitable keywords are also very competitive so you have to find the rare cases where the competition is a little lower to make it worthwhile.

Next, just link building and marketing with time and patience will get you results.
