Successful SEO Company Without Any Rankings?

I thought i would make this post to give all you warriors a good laugh.

For the last 5 years, i have been learning - losing - and eventually succeeding with search engine optimisation. Now it has not been an easy journey, but anything thats worth doing, usually isnt.

I did not provide seo services to other companies until around 4 months ago, when i decided to launch my own website. The plan was to get the website ranking for local seo keywords first and then move onto the bigger keywords as my site becomes more established.

In my mind, i thought that if my website was not ranking for seo related terms, then how on earth would anyone want to join my service. Having an seo service on a site with no rankings is like selling ice cream on a rainy day, BUT the demand for local seo was that great, the customers were literally bashing my door down to get their hands on this service.

As it happens, i had a couple of affiliate websites that ranked well for huge keywords, so i had to use these as an example to land the sales. Now i have gained good rankings for my clients, i use these as examples and still have not gained any rankings for my seo site.

My clients have better rankings than me, and its me who got them!

>> So as of today, i have decided to start a campaign for my own site to gain rankings for local and national keywords. If i can succeeed without having any rankings for my own site, i can only imagine how successful this website will be when it has good ranks.

I hope this made you laugh. If this cheered you up, please hit the thanks button.

LOL, yes, that's very true! In fact, I've heard an agency owner claim he feels guilty taking the time/resources to promote his site over his paying customers. His clientèle has mostly come from word of mouth and other referrals. I know he is succeeding in his business venture so you are definitely not alone my friend!

Most SEO companies do not get their clients from search engines. In most cases cold calling or advertising in the medias is what gets you clients. So I don't see why you would even care about ranking your own website for SEO related terms. Not to mention the fact that these keywords are generaly very hard to rank for and they don't get much traffic.

I agree but you're kind of missing the point. If you are an SEO consultant and can't effectively offer your own site then that may not speak well for your services. Some might look at it like someone selling a secret to weight loss when they are overweight themselves. They may not be convinced. It is not about optimizing for traffic but for proving your expertise in SEO.

however, as the originator mentioned you just need to show you can rank well for other terms at least on other websites. SEO keywords are almost impossible to rank for.

Yeah you should always have a decent ranking somewhere for your own site. I have been asked quite a few times how our own site ranks.

If you're plotting a campaign on something like 'SEO Company' then you're gonna be in with the multi-million pound companies who have 100 staff. Good luck with that one.

Focus on local SEO or SEO for your country. That would be easier than trying to rank worldmide for "seo company"

That makes sense to me. I don't think most small business owners go searching on the internet for "SEO consultant." They talk to their friends, they ask around, and find out who knows what they're doing.

Networking is more important in these types of situations.

I definitely agree that networking is key to succeeding with this type of service business - that said, I get clients through my writing site despite the fact it's not ranking well for anything yet and I don't even have any links to work samples up yet, so rankings definitely aren't make-or-break. I do have a bunch of keywords I want to rank well for, but they aren't the big ones that are going to take ungodly amounts of effort.
