HELP! Lost rankings

Hi all, This is my first post here but ive been reading for a while now.

My website is funkyfancydress.com Sorry, cant post a direct link as im new.

I woke up this morning to see that my website has literally dropped all rankings, and not by a couple of places. It has dropped many pages in google over night. I have checked the webmaster area on google and there are no indications in there of issues.

Google has literally dropped hundreds of pages that i had listed, even the ones that were on pages 5-10 in google.. Theyve just disappeared.

I have submitted a reconsideration to google and im awaiting a response.

Is there anything else i should be checking?

    Hi Wilkesy - have you been following any unorthodox / black hat seo strategies recently? It will be important to retrace the steps you have taken in the last couple of weeks to see if there is anything that you have done either on or off site that might have got you penalised by Google. Any changes to your onsite content and page titles can also have a big impact on your ranking, so it'll be important to see if there have been any major changes to that. Also check your xml sitemap to make sure all your pages are being indexed properly.

    Hope this gives you a few places to start.

      Hi,

      Thanks for the quick reply. As far as im aware i havent done anything recently that i havent done before. Onsite i havent made any changes. I had great rankings and as it was Halloween i left the site alone. I was ranked #5 for halloween costumes, now im about #17, literally overnight.

      Offsite i have been adding links as i normally would. A few Blog comments, Forum signatures and posts and directory submissions. Ive been doing this the same way for a year and not experienced any issues.

      This is absolutely gutting as this is the busiest time of the year for any fancy dress website and being listed #5 for Halloween costumes was amazing. Ive been there all year and now all of a sudden im dropped.

      Im doind a ranking report for all of the keywords i usually promote and the report is howing that 70% of my keywords are no longer listed in the top 100.

      I could sit down and cry!

    I have done it too but its went down you just need to change the content and the page title specifically.

    I would expect this over a period of time, not suddenly drop a whole website overnight, unless google has done a massive update which i havent seen any evidence of.

    A similar thing is actually happening to one of my sites now. Last week, I lost all of my rankings for every keyword I was ranking for (btw, I was only ranking for 5 keywords not hundreds). 2 keywords at #4. Then it came back after a week and yesterday it happened again. I'm still indexed though. So I'm hoping my site will start ranking again soon.

    Your site is still indexed. Maybe it's just google dance? You just have to wait it out I guess.

      Yeah this happens all the time, as ninal said, it's called google dance. Usually it gets back to a similar position in a few weeks.

    Im thinking it is a google penalty of some kind but its like looking for a needle in a haystack. I have checked content and everything seems fine. I have even checked the modified dates of the core .php files to see if anything has changed.

    Ive had a quick look thorugh links but nothing stands out. Im continuing to look.

    The one thing i have noticed, which i think is a bit strange, if you do a search for a keyword you will come across my website with the standard title shown in google. If you search for 'Funky Fancy Dress' you will come across my homepage, howeve google has some how changed the title to just 'Funky Fancy Dress' instead of my page title. I have tried doing the same for other domains and i cant re-produce the affect.

    I need to sort something out as this is really hitting me hard for traffic.

    how old is your website?
    Something similar has happened to me as well. First with one website (10 months old) which came back with better ranking in about 2 weeks. Then the same website went down again...few days ago and I am still in this kind of sandbox. Now another website is in the same situation (from yesterday).

    It would be good to exchange some info on our websites to understand what has happened. PM me if you can share the details.

    wilkesy, i wouldn't panick just yet. If it's just the "google dance", it happens to lot's of folks. Sometimes this happens when google is reassessing your site's rankings. Who knows? 2 weeks later you may actually come back ranking higher than you did before. It happened with some of my sites, and to alot of others. usually happens after you do some nice backlink-building activity.

    Don't panic! Sites sometimes jump up and down, you need to diversify into more niches and more sites to have a sustainable income though!
