Hi guys, I just wanted to through this one out there, and try and figure out the consensus.

Q. Is there a single best SEO strategy, or maybe a top 3?

It used to be all about META keywords, but there is so so much more nowadays.
I am currently working articles and back linking, what do you do?

I don't think there's “one” thing that will be the best strategy for SEO.

SEO is a combination of many things which all come together to produce a good ranking.

If your happy your target keyword has enough searches then you need to fist look at the competition on the first page of Google.

If competition is low to moderate then your site should have the following on & off page SEO.

    Keyword in domain name.
    Keyword in title.
    Unique Keyword rich content.
    Internal linking.
Back links using keyword as anchor text.
I like to add keyword relevant images & videos to my site.
I also place a couple of good outbound links on my sites too.
    Fast page load time.

These are just a hand full on the main factors to consider.

I don't think meta tags are is important as they used to be.

It's more about relevance with Google in the form of good, unique, content & back links.

I'm no SEO expect but this is what I've learned & work with.

That is certainly a good question. Google has just changed their algorithm again back last June. The main components are different now.

Here is the things that affect your SERPs:

    1. Content
    2. Backlinking structure
    3. Human activity - eg. "traffic to your site, comments on your blog, etc.

Great question. I hope this helps.

      (1) Google's algo is constantly evolving. That being said, what helped my sites rank well 12 months ago (optimized pages + backlinks) still works very well. Focus on optimizing pages and getting proper backlinks and you will be good to go, instead of thinking that Google overhauled everything a few months ago.

      (2) I know some seo "gurus" in their $2k product launches are harping on the human activity or whatever thing, but I just don't see it. In any event, visitor traffic does not affect GOOGLE SERP rankings.

      (3) "Content" - Now, a lot of people on IM forums like to say "content" when they mean "good content", but I just haven't found that the case, at least if you define good content the way that a typical human visitor would. Your content certainly needs to be optimized appropriately for the given keywords, Also, having engaging content or "good" content, can certainly help with conversions and whatnot, but I have found it has very little to do with actually ranking in Google (and so have some of my crap mini-sites).

Try using the strength of sites such as ezine articles or buzzle to get on first page. Write an optimised article on one of these and then build a load of backlinks to the actual article. You will be suprised of what opportunity that holds.

This allows you to gain first page rankings much faster for a good set of keywords but you would need to use something like UAW to keep up with the backlink building to each article.

Web 2.0, press release sites, free blogging sites and article directories can be used for this method. Have you ever been researching the search rankings and seen such sites listed? I know i have.

....and then you are ranking with your content, on domains that other people own.

They decide in 4 months they don't like your article because they don't like your profile picture, and they take down your article, or lens, or whatever. Your recourse? nothing

They decide in 3 months to change their allowed topics (Squidoo anyone?), and your article topic is a no go. Your recourse? nothing

They sell the site and close shop. Your recourse? nothing

That's not to mention the fact that many of these top sites (eg EZA) don't allow affiliate links, so you have to get traffic from the article to your site, and then sell to them, so you added in an extra step, and less overall conversions.

OR, you could just put the content on your own domains that you own and that you control. That way, you are building up a viable asset that you control, and that is what a long-term business should be about.

Bingo. never quite got that. I don't take issue with aden wanting a backlink. I mean its a backlink but the practice of ranking an ezine, goarticle etc by link building tons of links to it just never made sense to me. People always say "I am ranking for ....". Sorry. you are not ranking for anything. Their page is and you helped them by directing link juice to them.

Some traffic yes but the conversion on the reader clicking your link is quite low so you are getting a mere fraction of what the search volume at the spot actually is.

What i am trying to say is that when i have a money site (my own domain+hosting) i build backlinks to this from various sources including EZA. But i also build backlinks to the backlinks to increase the pagerank and strength of the backlink network as a whole.

If you do this from the start of launching a website, you will find that your articles, press releases and web 2.0 will rank for your target keywords before your money site and send the initial traffic, even if you build the same amount of backlinks to your money site as you do for each external sites.

The big picture is, a couple of months down the line, your money site will have a strong network of backlinks and will rank well for your target keywords. By that time, the money site could have out ranked your articles as your first backlinks will all point to it.

What a marvelous and seldom asked question indeed. Not enough people ask this.

I think people give Google more credit for knowing traffic related statistics than they know.

You've had some decent answers so far. One thing to keep squarely in mind is why you want to do all this SEO. Presumably, you have some commercial intent.

Which means you aren't just looking for a 'warm fuzzy' from seeing your pages ranking well.

Which also means you are looking to get your pages in front of people likely to act on what you offer, to your mutual benefit. In other words, you want your SEO efforts to bring you human eyeballs connected to brains seeking what you offer.

It's very easy to lose track of that when you're in the heat of trying to build those SERP positions.

Yes. there is exactly ONE strategy and any and everything else is either a detail of that strategy or completely bogus.

    1. Keyword competitive research
    2. On page SEO and content
    3. Link building

Thats it. Your search is over. If I put those three points by themselves in a pdf and priced it at $119 it still would be a better buy than 90% of secret SEO strategy offers.

What would you rather have, two backlinks from EZA or two backlinks from EZA that has high search rankings for your target keywords. Either way, you are building backlinks from sites you do not own.

Actually, I wouldn't care about having any backlinks from EZA It just isn't worth my time on an opportunity cost basis.

In any event, you were talking about focusing efforts on ranking an EZA article (which IMHO is not the way to go), not about EZA as a backlink source.

I use the method for new websites as it offers more targeted traffic faster than it takes to seo the site with a new domain but i still build the backlinks to the main site using EZA and it works like a dream.

There is no single best or best 3 methods to use. I mean it is ever changing and directly relates to what your competition is doing anyway.

Backlinking and Article Marketing are great, so stick with it. There are many different things you can do, ie high PR blog commenting, gov/edu linking, link wheels, profile/forum linking, we 2.0/bookmarking, etc. etc.

Just find something that works and try to diversify your link building efforts, study your competition, do what they are doing plus more.

Oh, and ALWAYS do your keyword research!!! choose buyers keywords and vary some low competition low traffic with some high competition high traffic so that you can some easy ones ranking while working on the harder ones.

SEO is complex, but the main thing to remember is that there are 2 parts to SEO. On-Page SEO & Off-Page SEO. Both are equally important.

Personally, I build a syndication engine. This means that I essentially set up a wordpress blog with my pages as my money site. I then use wordpress itself to host the actual blog section. Then, I write keyword optimized articles that point to the money pages on my domain. I then syndicate those articles to EZA, Articlebase, ArticleSnatch and GoArticles.

My blog, EZA, Articlebase, ArticleSnatch and GoArticles as well as any sites that pick up the articles all point to my money pages.

Additionally, I social bookmark with Onlywire and my RSS is posted to every RSSdirectory that I can find as well as FeedBurner.

Every article I post, blasts the network as well as any other articles from ArticleBase that I publish.

I get credit for the social bookmarks and rss feeds for article I do not own, I get all of that and backlinks for the articles I do own.

However, none of this compares with the power of site-wide link exchange with good anchor text in my experience.

    Just my 2 cents...FWIW.

If I had to give a single best strategy for SEO, here's is what I would say...

    ...Blogging!

By running a blog in your market and provding...

    ...Excellent content!

    - Better than that of other bloggers in your market, you've already won the SEO battle ahead of you...

...Then you just need to promote that content and you do that by engaging in Social Media and building relationships with other bloggers in your market.

I personally witnessed a 7 figure business built on the back of...

...1 single piece of content in a blog post... :-)

That content also attracted tens of thousands of natural links in the process...

I would have gladly paid upto $1000 for that information it was that good!

...But they gave it away for free! - Then they sold coaching services on the backend of that awesome content, which sold like candy to children after the trust was established :-)

Conclusion: Engage & build relationships in your market while delivering the best content you can deliver!
