Is or is NOT Duplicate Content - Same content on add on domains? ? ?

I have concerns regarding duplicate content on the same DNS but different domains.
My client had me build his wordpress site for his business on a domain hosted by HostMonster. They allow unlimited domains on the same account.

This client wants me to duplicate his primary domain onto sub/add-on domains on the same account (different domains with the same IP address) and just change the physical location on the pages of the additional domain sites for his businesses in other cities.

Obviously the client doesn't want to have to pay to have content all re-written when it will all say the same thing for the same business, just in different cities.

So I’m wondering if even though the duplicate content is under different domain name but falling under the same IP address, will they incur a duplicate penalty or be filtered out for geo targeted searches?

IE – search term: body shop Nashville TN
OR – Search term: body shop Memphis TN

The only differences between the 2 is domain name ie.

NashvilleBodyShop.com . . . and
MemphisBodyshop.com

And the physical street addresses and phone numbers.

It seems to me the geo tagging aspect on local searches should eliminate duplicate filtering.

Do you have experience with this situation? What did you learn?

What he proposes to do is done all the time--just not with subdomains.

For example, sites like texasgasprices.com, are owned by the same people,
gasbuddy.com, who own a gazillion other sites like arizonagasprices.com.

They are all the same sites, just a different script showing gas prices for that state
    or location.

All on the same ip, for that matter...

It's the way to go if you are in fact targeting something local in a bunch of
    cities or states.

Unless of course the business is stationed all across the country. Then you really
would not need to do that.

Gasbuddy.com kills a lot of myths...

If he is just in a few cities, I would do separate domains with what you propose.
    No subdomains.

But the point is moot unless he is listed in google maps. Those would get top billing.

    Thanks for the input Paul,

Well he is in 5 other cities besides the headquarters location.

I may have used the wrong terminology in saying sub/add-on domains.

They are domains on hosted on the same account in a sub-directory of the primary domain account but are accessed through their actual domain web address ie: www.location2.com.

But if I'm reading you correctly, as far as local listings are concerned the duplicate content shouldn't be an issue; right?

This poor guy was lost and totally Internet illiterate till I came along. He was getting calls with people saying they found him online (From unclaimed insider pages, merchant circle or one of the online yellow pages listings) and had claimed none of his listings.

Now that I have him in local 7 boxes on Google in the top 3 for his keywords, and somewhere between 1st and 4th organic positions on page one for the same keywords, he expects I can do the same thing for all his locations.

From what you are saying I can see where the local listings shouldn't be a problem since all I have to do it claim and finish the citation site's listing info on his other locations, but it is going to be interesting to see what happens as to organic listings.

I guess I could just explain to him I can get his local listings in the other locations to the top of page one but there is no guarantee about the organic listings.

The next step is to figure out if there is some way to automate the process of duplicating these sites. His first site is 47 pages and he has a girl doing blog posts for him as well. The whole site is on a WordPress platform. MMMMMan that's gonna be a lot of copy and paste.

Anyway, I sincerely appreciate your input Paul.

Anybody else wants to chime in I'm all ears/eyes.

    Thanks . . .

I found a GREAT site about cloning a Wordpress site or migrating a Worpress site to another domain - complete with video tutorials. Thought this would be worth sharing:

    Wordpress Migration

I just did this with a WP site and the clone is up and working just fine. Hope this helps anybody looking for this info.

      That's the way to go!

There is no duplicate content penalty.

Just take a look at texasgasprices.com and arizonagasprices.com
It's the same site, just the gas prices and domain are different.

I might even do a header graphic like the sites above, with the main domain
above the current domain. It says
      "by gasbuddy.com
      texasgasprices.com"

It would have been easy to just download the site, then upload it to another
domain. In fact, some hosts do that for free all in one swoop.

      Good luck!
