I currently have a blog which is about a month old. It has 12 posts. When do I start building backlinks? Do I wait for it to mature more before starting promotion? Will building backlinks now harm the reputation of my site in the eyes of Google?

    Immediately in my opinion.

I know a lot of people are afraid of the "sandbox" - if it does exist I've never been affected by it.

And if for some reason it does exist I've never seen good proof that it was caused by building backlinks to quickly.

Start right now and remember to build backlinks to your individual blog posts as well as your home page.

To be on the safe side you should also make sure that you don't hit your blog with thousands of backlinks in a short space of time.

There's no better time to start than now. Immediately, you start updating the blog, you have started building backlinks. Immediately you start writing articles and sending them to article directories, you have started building backlinks.

Immediately you start commenting on other blogs, you have started building backlinks. Immediately you start posting on forums, you have started building backlinks.

There's no specific time to start.

      The simple answer is:

Start building backlinks as soon as you have something worth linking to.

as an experiment i put up a simple services blog and two days later started book marking and article marekting as well as some profile links. the site ranked near the top for every keyword i targeted within 3 weeks. and it was brand new. i never experienced the "sandbox" with my efforts. one keyword that had the domain in it ranked #1 for the term with 10 mil competition. it still sits there today after almost 3/4 of a year.

honestly i'm no seo expert at all. i've just tried what others said have worked. and all the info i learned i learned here. so take a look around for some backlinking advice there's plenty of it

I would suggest you ping your site first before building a whole lot of links to your pages. This is how I do it for my sites and client's sites as well:

    1. Ping using scrapebox - Right after your site is done
    2. Build backlinks using article directories and blog networks
    3. Press Release (depending on the niche)

If you dont have the tools, there are free alternatives of course. But once you do make some sizable income, be sure to invest in these tools. They save at the very least 60% of my time. (Not even mentioning outsourcing. )

Just remember to build links consistently.

    Hope this helps,

I would suggest that you can build your backlinks once you have some posts on your site. You can build it slowly for each month. It would be better if you can build deep links among your pages. This is a powerful strategy if you intend to build a long term business.

    Hope it helps...

There's no time like the present to start. Submit articles to article directories and link back to your blog as well as to your blog posts.

I would also rewrite your blog posts and submit those as articles to article directories too.

Have you pinged your blog posts?

What I do is after I write my post I go to pingler and ping my blog post url

I start building links to my new sites right away and I have never had any problems from it. In my experience as long as you are providing good content and offer things that people actually want you have nothing to fear. I have heard many theories on the correct speed to build links. Personally the minute that I complete a site with quality original content I promote the heck out of it. I senuke it, submit to article directories, submit videos, and so on and so forth.

You are about a month late. You should be building back links immediately. It will get your site indexed faster.

Then you should be building both authoratative and reputation links(anchor text appropriate).

Backlink building is a very important part of our overall plan. I have found that by doing this on a consistent basis, like 3-5 backlinks a day, over time you have a solid footing in the search engines.

I have followed this plan on one of my other sites and now have well of 1600 backlinks from hundreds of different domains.

    Cheers,

    Jeff

Start right now! Remember, no one knows your blog even exists right now, so until you start promoting it, all of your hard work is in vain! Plus, it takes work and time to build quality links and promote your site. A few links isn't going to be enough to see dramatic results.

The only way that you can hurt your reputation with Google is to get links from link farms, or to build links too quickly. Google wants to see you building quality links at a natural pace. To them, getting 500 links in 1 day can look suspicious, especially for a new site. Just focus on getting the best links you can, the good 'ol fashioned, honest way

      Man, dont wait!

Start like this and have a fast index.

      social bookmarking (twitter, facebook, etc..)
      bookmarking (delicious, dig...)
write some articles and send to directories. (ezine, goarticles)
      forum (signature)
      blog comment (no spam)

i sugest you use folow and unfolow links.
dont forget use your anchor text.

...tip... if your website its new (less than 1 year) make 5 links day.
if the domain have more than 2 years, you can explode links and no problem.

The first step in building backlinks is to find places where you can get back to quality. a valuable aid in this process is reversed Builder tool. When you enter in the search window, the inverse generator tool list of sites where you can send an article to send the message, or simply reverse your site.

Just do what everyone tells you to do, begin immediately. there is no need for it to mature The building of backlinks at any stage will not harm your sites (at least from my experience) but im confident to say it wont.

Also once you start rising in the search engines due to your backlinking efforts, don't get discouraged when you see your site suddenly drop in the search rankings and don't automatically come to the conclusion that it is being Sandboxed. sometimes this happens and its actually pretty common, there is a term for it and its called the Google Dance.

It is important to start early. It takes time to build up and it's always good to start with small volumes of back links first. Look for sites with high PR. Most social sites like Reddit, Digg all are good places to share your content and get backlinks to.

You should start building backlinks daily to the site from when it first has content. However, the links you build to the site in the first couple months of its life is very important so as to avoid the "Aging Filter" Google implements on new sites that some call the "Sandbox".

Week 1: Try to get your site editorially linked to. This is done by submitting your site to the top handful of directories online. Here are the ones I always submit my sites to as they are the most respected in Google's eyes for their editorial review:

    Dmoz
    Yahoo
    BOTW
    Skaffe
    Gimpsy
    Joe Ant
    Go Guides

Now this is going to cost you some money upfront, but if this is your main blog that you are using for your business or branding then this is highly recommended to get it off to a good start.

You should also find and submit your site to some niche directories... these can be a very powerful source of links.

Week 2: What I like to do after submitting to the directories is submit a Press Release about your website at PrWeb. I recommend you outsource your Press Release to a proficient release writer then submit it at PRWeb for distribution. (Don't forget to add keywords in the release and deep link to your blog and its pages... but to be able to do this, it will cost you $200.)

In week 2 I also like to Submit an article to the top article directories online. Here are the ones I recommend:

    EzineArticles
    IdeaMarketers
    GoArticles
    WebProNews
    ArticleDashboard
    ArticleCity
    Article Alley
    Amazines
    Articles Factory
    Buzzle

Avoid mass submissions to 1000's of article sites, this will just get you filtered out of the results with a new site.

Week 3: In week 3 you should have some good content on your site by now, so what I recommend is that you start finding potential link partners to link to your content. If your content is good, then just tell other bloggers about it. You can also link to other peoples blog posts in your content where it makes sense to do so, then let the power of reciprocation bring links back your way.

You can also start trading links in your blogroll.. BUT... only do this with high quality sites in your niche and never more that 5-10 sites.

Week 4: Start creating vidoes that are helpful to your market and use TubeMogul to syndicate them to the top video sites online. Do a unique video and an article once per week from this point onwards and keep submitting to the sites above.

Start brainstorming some ideas to add exceptionally high quality content on your blog and add social media buttons in full view. For more details on this search google for "Link Baiting" - this can be a very poweful source of links.

This is a good way to start off your site and from then onwards once your site starts ranking for some long tail terms you can start to pick up the rate of links you build and from a variety of other sources.

This will ensure you stay out of the sandbox and gain the trust of Google that you are not a link spammer.

I'll look at it a little differently. If you are trying to get indexed / build some traffic, start right after the site launches.

However, look at the niche you are in. If you are going to start soliciting links (email / letters etc), develop your site so it looks legitimate, has the appearance of having a great look/feel for user experience, then start.

I've got one site I'm developing content for right now and haven't started any backlinks just yet. That's my plan starting next month.
