I am considering whether to enter a small niche and I have done some research. Market Samurai shows a site with this keyword phrase has 50 backlinks and the domain on which this page is on has 10,000 backlinks. It is ranked number 3 in Google.

Do you think it is worth competing with this page in this domain?

Has nothing to do with the number of backlinks.

There's a whole lot more to your competition than that.

What are you planning on doing, getting 10,000 +1 and thinks that's
    the ticket?

If google put sites #1 based on backlinks, the whole search game
would be upside down. Not sure why such insanity on the mentality
    of backlinks.

You are assuming the backlinks all matter.

Any niche is worth competing for if you have the stomach for
    what it takes.

If you were disappointed in your results today, lower your standards tomorrow.

      Thank you for the reply.

What I am looking at, is the page which contains the keyword phrase, this has only 50 links. What are the chances of competing with this page?

Does it matter that it is on a domain with 10,000 links?

First step would be to see if the page has the keyword in url, title and h1. Most probably do. If they do not, then you're good to go. Second, I would look to see how many internal links with the keyword anchor text there are.

Thanks for the advice, Samauri indicates url yes, title no, h1 no. I am going to check out the anchor links now. But I think I will give this look to tackle this niche!
