How important is to have "relevant" backlinks?

Here's an hypothetical example...

Let's suppose that I have a site about dog training and want to build a few good backlinks to it. By accident, I stumble upon a PR8 page where I can leave a dofollow link. But that page has nothing to do with dogs - it's about public speaking. What to do? Should I drop that page just because it's "irrelevant"? Does that link have no value to me because the PR8 page is not related to my website theme?

I'm wondering if Google has a way to measure the backlinks relevancy and if it penalizes the sites that have "irrelevant" backlinks.

Thank you for reading this!

Bogdan

Irrelevant links won't penalize your site, if it does then your competitors will just blast your link a ton of junk sites to have you deindexed...

However irrelevant a link will be less effective as say compared to a more relevant link from a lower PR site.

What's the URL of that site? Just so we can make sure. Kidding. Relevant or irrelevant, will not matter in this case. Besides, the public speaker may like dogs.

      Of course. :-))

That was only a hypothetical situation, as I said. I simply wanted to make me clear through a concrete example.

I don't think so. I saw some business sites linked to adult sites and yet ranked well. A link will always be a link but each one may have different impact based on what kind of site they are stationed.

The PR8 link will give your website more strength, relevant or not. I try to stay relevant with my links, but if there comes a strong backlink opportunity along my way, I just take it.

Relevant backlinks is important. Imagine yourself visiting a gadgets related blog then all of a sudden you clicked a link which directed you to a very different site (dog training for example). Will you be happy?

If I you interested with dog training, then probably that would be fine with you right? But if not, then it would be a disaster to you. :-)

I know traffic from backlinks is good but it will not assure you of targeted traffic.

You're perfectly right. However, in my original post I was not talking about backlinking for traffic, but about backlinking for increasing Google PR.

First let me define backlink for those of you new to SEO. "Backlinks are links that are directed towards your website. The number of backlinks is an indication of the popularity or importance of that website."

According to me, When search engines calculate the relevance of a site to a keyword, they consider the number of QUALITY inbound links to that site. So we should not be satisfied with merely getting inbound links, it is the quality of the inbound link that matters.

Every link has some value...but niche links have an upper hand for sure.

It will not be very effective for your website and it will not penalize you for this, but as per SEO purpose it is recommended that you should create backlinks with relevant site only.

No, I wouldnt say dont leave a link just because its not relevant. Still leave a link ecspecially if you are working on two sites that are different industries.

Although, so I've read, its better to have 10 relevant links than 100 irrelevant links. So try to build relevant links too.

It matters just not in the way people think. If you post a link that is not relevant then it has a MUCH higher chance of being deleted at some point down the line. I think this is perhaps the number one mistake in link building that people make. There are strategies that allow you to make either perfectly relevant links or neutral (to the topic) links and then allow you to convert that link juice to your relevant keywords. Doing so allows those links to last.

This has had a lot of coverage in the past. The upshot is that a lot of experts are basically saying relevancy does not matter as much as Google tells you it does or you may assume it does.

Also, relevancy as Google sees it is not as clear-cut as a person might think, just open up Google Wonderwheel and start drilling down, you will find some right funny relations in there.
