SEO and Keyword Rich Domains

Hello,
I was under the impression that Keyword Rich domains can be a good choice for SEO purposes. Obviously, though most of the .com's are taken. I was wondering if you have had any luck getting ranked via a keyword rich domain with a second tier domain.
I am not looking for the ability to brand. I just want to get traffic.
