That's hard to say with any degree of accuracy. They are definitely estimates.

First, it depends on whether you use broad, phrase or exact match type. If you want the best estimate, use exact match. If it's low and you get more traffic, great!

Second, it depends on where you rank in the search engine results for a specific keyword. Just because 5 billion people are searching for your keyword, that does not mean they will all click on your link. I believe appx 70% of the traffic goes to the 1st 3 positions on the first page of Google.

If you're using it for Google AdWords, the impressions typically seem lower than the estimates. Either way, it's hard to say just how accurate the tool is because there are so many other factors that play into the equation.

Use the numbers as a rough guide of what you can expect.

The new keyword is suppose to be more accurate. MarketSamurai had a nice post on their blog about it.

From my own esperince, the new keyword tool is much better than the previous one. The old tool is WAY out. However, I think that it is still not very accurate as the tool only gives you estimates but it should be good enough for you to start with. Many paid keyword tools use the data from Google Keyword Tool anyway.

I have read in other forums that it is inaccurate. How true is this? and what are the other alternatives?

From my experience, it hasn't been accurate. I don't think there will ever be a tool that can accurately determine search statistics. However, there are some terms that get a lot more searches than the Google keyword tool estimates. Focus on getting traffic from more sources than Google, and it won't be a problem.

It really depend on what you use the data for. If you are using it for adwords on Google then it is pretty accurate but I always test a extremely lower price but if you are using it to optimize for Top Search Engine Position then that is a total different story. There are many other variables you need to consider. Like how hard will it be for you to get top position for that keyword. A long with many others.

If you want to check the exact search volume, run a test Google Adwords campaign on your chosen keyword(s). It will give you an idea whether the Google keyword tool is giving you reliable numbers. While the new keyword tool is a lot better than the old one, it is not always accurate ....
