Which Links are More Worth the Effort?

I am looking for opinions on backlinking strategies. Here's why: I normally do article marketing with some success, but it is very, very time consuming. I have done Directory submissions with a program (my first time trying this) for a couple sites... PR was given by the program and they were a mixture of PR0 sites up to PR3 sites. There were 115 successful submissions, many approved, and this was completed 1 month ago. When I check the backlinks today, there is like 2 directory submissions. On another site there are 3. I take this as a waste of time. In the past, I have also used RSS, forums, blog commenting, etc., but am looking to put some perspective on these, so here is what I am trying to figure out...

Now I have some new sites (15-20) that I want to start backlinking to. I need a variety of links and wanted to try some new approaches. Would you guys please give your opinions on what kind of linking is best and which is completely a waste of time (like are directory submissions a waste)? Like what type of linking is best for quick links, what kind of links will stick longer, which will help with ranking, etc. All opinions will be appreciated. Thanks!

Cindy P.

I don't think submitting to article directories is a waste of time. It just depends on which ones you are submitting to.

Also, doing exactly what you are already doing, forum posts with a signature can help as well.

    Blogs are good as well.

    Hope this helps a little.

It wouldn't have occurred to me at all that Cindy might have meant article directories?! URL directories, I think? I'm just saying ...

If you want quality backlinks and targeted traffic, try guest posting on blogs. If you're not familiar with how it works, you go to a blog related to your niche and ask them if you can write an article for them. In exchange, you get a byline with a link to your site at the end of the article.

It's not really a quick solution (you've got to write some content, and it could take time before your post is actually published), but it will definitely help.

Actually you are right Alexa, I did mean URL directories as I have had some success with low comp keywords using article directories.

I am just looking for opinions on what types of linking are best for ranking and what types are useless.

        Thanks.
