Massive Drop in Index for our site

Please give your suggestion on what could have gone wrong.

We had over 100000 pages in googles index 2 months back, they dropped to 50000 last month and now its only 6000. Thats massive drop.

Does any one know why would that happen?

I checked webmaster tools and I don't seem to find any issue with crawling and page not found etc.

What could be the issue?? This is huge for us.

    Sometimes pages drop out of index and come back, but that does sounds like a big drop...

      Google does appear to be making major changes to the index.

      I have seen sites with top ranking disappear from the top 1000

      When these pages vanish so to all the links they have to other sites. That is why there has been a dramtic drop in the number of backlinks.

      I think the deindexing of all these pages is what is causing all the changes. It is likely that to good ranking sites lost most of the supporting backlinks during this time.

    We have around million pages, we are UK based company that deals with home improvement. We do SEO and ranking is better than our competitors, ranking has not dropped, links have not dropped, its the pages that have dropped drastically.

    The pages that are dropped are our secondory pages, we used to get traffic from long tails. The drop in traffic is about 6000 since last 3 weeks. Thats huge as well.

    We cannot afford to build links for all million pages.

    i just checked all of my sites.. a site that was #2 is now on page 14 another one dropped to page 8 and a pretty new autoblog is suddenly #4 .. wtf?

    You may wait for some days to see if the pages are back or not. In most cases, pages are removed from the search engine index if the bots suspect your site contains malware or other codes that could negatively affect the security of your website visitors. Sometimes the search engine bots guess correctly, sometimes they give false alarm and the pages are deindexed. If you are sure you are managing your according to Google Webmaster Guidelines, wait for some days to see if there would be any improvement
