The No Follow tag. Can it be beneficial?

Google has been saying for sometime now that no follow tags do not pass pagerank or link juice. I understand What Google is claiming however I must say that this does not say they will not index the links and give them value. The links are listed as valid links in webmaster tools and after seeing some tests it does appear that they do carry some value. By sticking to the claim Google is definately cutting down on blog and forum spam so if they were to let the cat out of the bag so to speak the internet would begin to have more of this type of spam again and I do understand the logic. However I cannot say that I have ever heard Google claim that these types of links do not have some value.. What are your thoughts?

Nofollow does not pass PR. That's it. Period. End of discussion.

Now what does that have to in and of itself for SEO?

You need to think a little...

But to make a blanket statement that it does not matter for SEO
      is false.

There is a whole host of reasons why a nofollow link (read: ANY link)
contributes directly or indirectly to SEO. But, I'm too lazy to list any.
      They are obvious, actually...

It would be the same as saying twitter does nothing for SEO because
the links are nofollow...facebook is useless because they are nofollow,
actually don't even show up. Any link is valuable for SEO...you just need
to understand the workings of building an authority site...and the rewards!

I think that what he's saying is posted the correct area of interest they will drive targeted traffic to your site, which after all isn't a bad thing.
