If I make a squidoo page about widgets, and I put a link on that page to my main website on widgets, then I have just given my site a back link.

Basically any links you create anywhere on the web that point to your site are your backlinks.

If you've ever read an article on ezinearticles.com, you'll notice that the author always leaves a link or two at the end. They'll say somthing like "For more information on xx, click here...".

That my friend, is a backlink.

Backlinks are like the people above said, it is a site linking back to you. However, those don't just have to be created by you, yourself. If you have a popular site with good information, people will link to you naturally and you will find that you get backlinks that you never put up on your own.

      Hey Sofya!

A backlink is basically the same thing as a sort of "inlink". It is a link on someone else's site that leads to your own, and it's extremely important to get a large number of backlinks that are of high quality, relevancy and from respected sources.

First, in SEO, part of the algorithm for ranking your page on search engines is determined by the number and quality of backlinks to your site, providing they occur naturally and you have not purchased them.

Second, backlinks are how you get known on the Internet. If lots of other sites provide a link to yours, you will get a good amount of traffic to your websites.

The two places where you should be looking to get backlinks from if you're trying to increase traffic and search engine ranking (where your site will appear on a search engine), are general sources, like digg.com, and on other sites relevant to the topic of your own site.

As for "how" to get backlinks, there are many ways to increase your backlinks.

      Here are just a couple:

      1. Contact related sites, and ask them to link to you, and you can offer reciprocal linking.

      2. Link threading. This is when you post a link to your site on someone else's blog, usually in the text of your blog. Keep in mind that people can edit your post. Make sure that the website you're directing people to relevant and interesting to readers of that particular blog.

Hope this makes backlinking a little more clearer.

        Hello Sofya...

Again, if you browse the forum a little, you'll get all the answers you need...but here's what backlinking in a nutshell:

-Backlinks are considered by the search engines as "votes" for the importance of your site pages regarding a certain topic, the more "votes" your site pages get, the more important it's in the eyes of the search engines.

-It is a major factor in the search engines algorithm used to rank pages in the search engine results page.

-It's a major factor, but it's not the only one, Google (for instance) has more than 100 factors in its algorithm.

-It's one of the most abused subjects in the IM world, and more than you expect, you'll get wrong, misleading information regarding backlinks circulated as trusted information, so you have to be aware who are you listening to.

Here's a clear example, although the poster did an appreciated effort to give information, most of the info stated here is either wrong or "misunderstood".

No offense here, but that's the harsh reality.

        Examples:

-Reciprocal links are not a good practice anymore, and it helps your pages alittle (if any) regarding seo.

-Relevancy is a controversial subject, and it's not seen by search engines the same plain way we think about it.

backlinking is one of the easiest and quickest ways to get traffic to your site and its another very important part in the SEO equation. Basically its a link "back" to one of your sites or pages. Its a very simple and easy project to accomplish.
